  • Is this music? Do you like it? ARCTOPUS

I just got back from a show in the city and the opening band was the reason I went. Behold... the Arctopus.

I just spent 5 minutes and this was the best live vid I could find of this technical insanity.

    here's their MySpace http://www.myspace.com/beholdthearctopus

This was undoubtedly the best display of technicality I've ever seen in person.

My question... is this music? Is it something you could enjoy live? Does it make you want to cower in a corner listening to Boston, Metallica, Killswitch? - whatever you like.

Minds were blown, and I recommend you check them out if it appeals to you at all.

Yeah, some of my friends recommended this band to me awhile ago, pretty good stuff. Personally, I like tech-bands with more of a song-edge to them though, ala Martyr, Watchtower or Atheist. But tech bands like Necrophagist, Gorguts and Spiral Architect are beyond awesome as well, I find myself humming some of their insane cacophony of notes all the time.

Arctopus doesn't have as many memorable melodies. Still music in my books though!

EDIT: Wow, I forgot about watchtower :/

Can't watch videos at work, but I'm assuming they're similar to Dillinger Escape Plan?

Freyr: Watchtower rules. I need to get a copy of Energetic Disassembly.

I knew them through this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BgNhR9oisM

The bass player has great skills, I really don't like the guitar player though..

That guitar mag video has horrible tone. What is with the guitar mags? It's like they have nothing but Peavey Bandits at their studios. They really need the drums in that song...

The bass (really, it's a warr guitar) player plays in Dysrhythmia, another amazing band.

Whats the difference between a Warr Guitar and a Chapman Stick anyway?

Different makers, same concept - touch guitar. Chapman is the original, but both makers have their share of innovations. Emmet Chapman, didn't like what Mike Warr and Trey Gunn (ex King Crimson) said about his instruments and he tried to sue them for infringing on his ideas and hurting his business. The lawsuit went nowhere. The tuning of these instruments is flexible and artists choose their own configurations.

Not really my thing, abit too weird. Sounds cool in parts though, I guess it's just a genre I'm not used to.
