some players like van halen are all improv, and are only happy winging it. Others, like Randy Rhoads are very methodical and compositional. Friedman is very much like Rhoads, very structured and comfortable with step by step composition, it would appear. Friedman is great (fucking obvious) but from what I have seen , in many clips etc, jamming and improvising are not really his strong points. he is a composer, to my mind. And that works for him, and it aint a criticism.
