Marty Friedman & Paul Gilbert (Young Guitar video)

This probably is the best thing I've listened from Marty in a long time, he can make Paul Gilbert sound a bit ordinary I can't believe how he can come up with so many cool phrases and connect them in such a great way, I'm not even mentioning how incredible his vibrato is! My fav. guitarist of all times! And Paul Gilbert is also one of my favorites, he's probably the most clever guitarist around now

Cool, I remember last year seeing him on an episode but I didn't realize Paul was on the show more than just once. I wish they had a show like this in America. This is way better than some stupid shit like American Idol or any other musical show I can think of.

Theres a whole bunch of videos from this show. They have done 2 or 3 shows together I think.

In this one and all the other clips, I think Gilbert is so much better, that it was kind of a mismatch to even pair them up.I guess its because they both happen to speak Japanese. Everytime I see a clip of Marty jamming or trading off with someone,the playing is so much weaker I can't believe its the same guy that does the stuff on the albums.

Gilbert just sits there and has fun, funking out these 70's licks and grooving away with perfect technique and a cheeky attitude to his playing. Friedman is kind of slopping up the fretboard, playing licks that don't really fit, with no groove whatsoever. Its almost painful to watch sometimes.

As for playing, I couldn't care less for players who are playing just standard licks using standard timings and being called "solid players" Watch the video & read my message you'll see for yourself what I mean. If your opinion still doesn't change I can't do anything further but what I'm saying is kinda obvious in that video

The video, and the 3 or 4 others they have done together for japanese tv have been around a long time, Ive seen them all a long time ago.

Martys playing is not that great, just aimless noodling that doesn't fit and doesn't go anywhere. Watch the jamming he does at the beginning of his star licks video, yuck, boring, frankly Al Pitrellis is better on his.

That is a bad clip of Marty dude, you got your fanboy glasses on and the lenses are wayyyy to thick.

And I like Marty's playing. Just not here.

I don't care about any critic about his playing because that doesn't affect his musicianship. As you can see Gilbert plays nearly flawless in that video but that doesn't give him fresh ideas or any ideas that are not really ordinary. But Marty has lots of them, which was the reason I started the thread. You don't like it, that doesn't interest me a bit, I just replied to you cause you sounded like you didn't watch the video and neither you read my post

It was right there in my post... " licks that don't really fit" ... "aimless noodling" ... "no groove" . I am referring to his musicianship: his ideas and note choices were unfocused sounding, he had no chemistry in the improv, it was unmusical. Paul played pretty standard stuff, but at least it fit the spirit of the little jam they were having.

I think Marty is hard to listen to without the context of a chord progression behind him, because he's so into soloing to the chords, and refuses to just play normal diatonic stuff. Just having an A chord going in the background, and having Marty noodling in and out of whatever random chords he's hearing in his head, while Paul is going nuts within the A scale, I think it's safe to say that most people would pick Paul's playing as more musical. I love Marty Friedman and his crazy improvisation when given a progression - something I still don't quite fathom and aspire to, but here I think Gilbert wins.

To me in this video he does nearly "nothing" that a good guitar player can't come up with Marty has lots of cool phrases in the video behind which you can probably put more than 1 chord progression

Thats all I'm a-sayin'. Musicians have to evaluate a context and use good judgement. In this case Gilbert read the situation correctly, and played something appropriate for a breezy little rock jam. Obviously Paul Gilbert is capable of much much more than that, but he used good judgement and had some fun at the same time. There needs to be chemistry between the players, find the groove.. Marty fiddles away like Paul isn't there, like he's alone warming up or something.

Marty actually played a bunch of pretty standard licks, nothing unusual or unique about them at all. Over the right backing in the right context, I'm sure they would sound better. In this context, it sounded like a fish out of water. Its all about the situation, and the right approach. That is part of musicianship.

There are lots of clips and songs etc. with good Marty playing. My point was just that this in particualar isn't one of them, from what I could see.

My point is not that complicated ie. why I was underwhelmed with the clip.
