  • Shredding on a Fender Jaguar?

That's a video of young Joe Pass playing jazz on a Fender jaguar (he played much more frequently her sibling, the jazzmaster) he favoured before getting his ...

    Apparently no problem...

    Great link!

For those that think great guitar was born in the
sixties, Joe had a lot of shred. And, He got a bunch of
that from Charlie Christian, and go all the way back to Django!

    Rock On!

I like Joe Pass alot although mostly that mellow solo stuff is what I've heard, but the most amazing thing is the tone, it actually sounds like a jazz guitar, I guess that shows how much tone can be in the fingers.

Actually the most amazing thing is that the guitar stayed in tune for the whole tune!!!!
I had both a Jazzmaster and Jaguar, and had a lot of problems, and just didn't play well, rubbery feel, no sustain, banjo tone, strings popping off saddles, no wonder those clowns in Sonic Youth and Dinasaur Jr. like them!

In my opinion Fender's first guitar and bass was his best, and each improvement got worse. Although the strat led to Superstrats which are of course the ultimate electric guitar

I'm glad that someone knows Charlie Christian, he played bebop before Charlie Parker and influenced pretty much every player that came after him.

And Django was the sickest dude ever

Roll off the tone, play with flatwounds and it's amazing what sounds like jazz tone.

A little off topic, but you think that the Tele is better than the Strat? And do you think the original, one-pickup Precision is better than the Jazz Bass?

Man, what a great vid. It's strange to see Joe without that bigass ES that he switched to later. If you're into jazz, that was it!!!

I wouldnt say he shreds but J Mascis is awesome IMHO. Now the guys in Sonic Youth with their alternate tunings (read out of tune) they need to practice.

I don't understand the initial question, or rather the reason behind it. If a guitar is set up peroperly, and the player knows what he's doing, one could shred effortlessly and flawlessly on a K-Mart Special.

As I understand it, EVH's original Frankie (and all his guitars) had incredibly high action, though I don't think anyone gave a specific measurement.

I like Teles better than Strats but I realize of course, many consider the Strat the ultimate electric guitar.

Actually, you got me on the bass, I've never tried:

I think has a fatter tone than the Jazz, I had one for my home recording.

Yeah, Dinasaur JR has some good tunes, but Sonic Youth, I don't get it

It's funny, I wonder how many of the hipsters and critics who don't play guitar think that "alternate tunings" refers to being out of tune, and not tuning to AEAEAE or whatever nonsense.

                      I bet there's actually quite a few

Well, I guess Jazzmasters and Jags are associated with surf or alternative, not shred.

I did see that Masics Jag has jumbo frets and a tune o matic type, and actually it's a shred color haha:

Thing is that a band like Sonic Youth is keen on trying out things that nobody thought of before and in their way they have been very innovative. They take the airy sound and short sustain of the Fender jazzmaster to a completely other dimension. In addition their Jazzmasters are modified with Humbuckers and with the rythm circuit removed. But they leave the wacky trem intact because it enables them to play BEHIND the bridge and get those weird flageolettes.

One of Thurston Moore's Jazzmasters, it has the pickups wired into a master volume with the rythm circuit removed, the bridge pickup is a Dimarzio and the bridge itself is a Tune-o-matic

One of Lee Ranaldo's Jazzmasters, it has both of its pickups replaced by Fender Wide Range Humbuckers, like Thurston's guitar it has all the circuitry removed infavor of a master volume and it also appeared to have had a Kahler at one point.

Both of the guitars pictured are pretty normal compared with what else they have at their disposal. There's a song called "Eric's trip" which is played on a de-fretted guitar strung up with bass strings.

Look at this guitar and ask yourself if you could have saved your life if somebody would have handed you this guitar and asked you to play something.

And apart from their noise art songs they also apply those strange tunings of theirs to very haunting and sometimes beautiful effect in songs with normal structures.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Such as in this one "Little trouble girl"

Or in this one "Sugar Kane"

Granted, Sonic Youth is an aquired taste but I'm sure that if you know what to look for you'll find cool stuff in their songs too.

And lest we forget, as guitar players we should be able to play guitars and get something that sounds good from them REGARDLESS of how high the action is or how out of tune it is.

I love my Jaguar! It's the most comfortable body on the planet IMO. I talked to Warmoth about doing one with a Floyd. They said no. I need to talk to Ken Warmoth. I know he would do one for me. (for some added charge)

I met Joe on a airplane trip from S.F. to Salt Lake City. He taught me how to travel with a guitar while on the plane. I had front row tickets the next night at a Club in SLC that he gave me. What an awesome player, especially when he gets that syncopated alternating bass going on at the same time he is playing the melody line. An awesome shredder he is!

Here's mine! (I think the Photobucket sizing is on the fritz again!)

Ah, I just looked at the Warmoth site and it looks like they may do any type of bridge now. Guess what my next project is!!!!
