Revolver: How do you feel when fans say MEGADETH's best lineup was you with drummer Nick Menza, gutiarist Marty Friedman, and bassist David Ellefson?

Mustaine: Well, they're entitled to their opinion, totally, and if they're talking from a music point of view, that's understandable, because there's only been one record so far with the new lineup. But what they have to realize is that I sang almost every single note of Marty Friedman's guitar solos, and I wrote the majority of Nick's drum parts, and I wrote almost every bass note that Ellefson played. It's just a matter of these guys getting into the groove.

That is absolutely ridiculous. That's why you hear all those odd scale choices in Dave's solos...

That Mustaine has quite an ego on him huh?!

It must be true because he's made this same statement in Guitar World, Guitar Player, House & Garden, Reader's Digest, etc, etc.

          • but it's true that Dave likes to dictate, Vinnie Colaiuta said that Dave pretty much told him how to play every beat... makes me wonder why he hiered technicaly the most proficient drummer in the world to record with him...

            • The thing about Marty can not be true. If it was, Dave could play a lot more melodic solos, instead of his sloppy pentatonic shit. And yes, I AM a Megadeth fan.

              • That's just a rumour as well as what Endrik wrote

I remember "watching" an interview of Dave where he said "I recorded the song Tornado of souls and gave it to Marty for him to write a solo. When he finished his writing I went to the studio and listened to it, I said nothing and shook his hand. That was when I realised I chosed the right guitarist for Megadeth" Moreover a couple of the Mega-Marty solos are improvised like the Vortex solo

Plus if he were hearing all those exotic & made up scales we would be hearing them in Dave's writing & playing also

As for Vinnie, again Dave said himself that first he let Vinnie play how he wants to, and if Dave doesn't like it, he gave Vinnie a basic idea about what he wants and if Vinnie doesn't do again as good as Dave likes he told him exactly what to do That's giving enough place to a drummer in my opinion.

I'm not saying he doesn't like to dictate but not in these particular situations..

                  • I do remember an interview with Marty when he said that the clean middle eastern run he does on Holy Wars was the one "Dave" wanted and that he (Marty) liked something else...So Dave did dictate that according to Marty...

if you are familiar with Vinnie's drumming style then he definetly didn't have enough place in that album, but he is a real pro and the most hired session drummer in LA right now so doing what the others want isn't a big deal for him

                      • When I first heard Drover was leaving my first thought was Rusty Cooley, he's great, plays Dean and would really do well in 'deth. Chris is a good pick too, I really hope they put up a couple video samples from this weekend's rehearsals to hear how they are gelling together.

If I recall correctly, Marty was just kind of messing around and whipped that out, and Dave said "Good enough" and Marty wanted to redo it, so Dave dictated that, but not in a creative sense.

stupid!? its obvious, but if i'm wrong then tell me why does it seem that megadeths albums got lighter with metallicas? coincidence? i think not.

                            • hahahahahaha, who cares if dave can't let go. that is HIS problem. if he HAS copied metallica, who cares? to me megadeth was always different. much more technical and less "catchy" songs. metal dudes that liked technical stuff gravitated to megadeth while the mainstream gravitated toward metallica. to me they are apples and oranges.

                              and, again, who really cares?

                              and finally....

On the subject of Dave and his outlandish statements, he sounds more and more like a scientologist than a christian. I do not think, however that the people at revolver or blabbermouth have that much credibility when it comes to verbatim quotes. They are, after all, in the business of dredging up muck.
