Saw Paul Gilbert last night at Tower Records in Shibuya (Tokyo).
He was doing an in-store promo for his new album, which will be released on January 23rd.
He played 7 tunes from "Silence..." over 45 minutes or so.
A couple of the songs had "pop" chord progressions, but he used odd rhythms to spice things up in these tunes as well.
That boy can play his ASS off, and he's funny too.
At one point between songs, he said,
"Hmm... What should I play next?"
I yelled out,
"SCARIFIED!!!" He laughed, played an F chord, and started singing,
"Hey Jude..."
My favorite tune out of the ones that he played was "Bronx 1971". The rhythm had a 70's porn soundtrack vibe, of course with some crazy PG shredding on top of it.
He was playing an Ibanez Iceman with three single coils, BTW.
Sorry, no pics, the venue was pretty strict about not allowing photography
