    Why?

because of his touch/feel/tone/approach/rhythm and his fingerings are often very uncommon

I love his playing & his tone. I haven't read all the articles, but apparently he's a total perfectionist and he's obsessed with getting a unique sound. He'll do whatever it takes, like playing some notes in really difficult positions because of the slight difference in tone compared to a more efficient fingering. I've known people who go nuts trying to get that sound, but it's really hard to imitate, if not impossible. Some say the gear has a lot to do with it, but I think it's 99% about how he plays.

I think that clip was from '88. Check out how much he had progressed compared to this '85 version, also from Austin City Limits. It's on stage6, and you may need a divx browser plugin to watch it. Stage6 is pretty awesome, btw.

also, one important thing is the jazz players' sextuplet feel he has durning the fast passages

and he is trying to get violin's delicate tonality with his fingers

Has anyone noticed how part of Cliffs of Dover sounds like the piano bit from that K-ci and Jojo song, All My Life?

He's one of the very best. Wonderful tone and godly technique. Trouble is, I find that a lot of his music is just a bit too nice for my tastes.

I guess I'm the odd one out here, b/c I think his tone is muddy and his phrasing does not do anything for me.

agreed on the Too Nice comment also.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

My favorite by him was Righteous, particularly the live version from Texas. His tone on that is great. I may be the odd guy out, but while Cliffs is good, ti doesn't speak to me. Righteous however does!

EJ is a really humble guy,one can easily get the immpression that he is a guitar player because he truly loves it.A former bandmate of mine and I talked to him a few years back at a guitar show in Austin. My friend Mark was there to hook up with Ty Tabor ( they ride dirt bikes together) and he hooked us up.EJ was all into vintage gear, asking us what we had looked at and what we thought about some of the new stuff that was out.Nice guy, great guitarist....
