DT is extremely boring live. They just stand up there and play the song perfectly. Once the wow factor wears off, it's a very boring show.

I agree that they've gone way downhill. I&W is their best, and each successive album (with the exception of Scenes) just gets worse. I'm waiting for them to stop playing contrived boring 7-string metal riffs and get back to their progressive roots. Symphony X passed them a long time ago.

edit: oh and I'm glad they got rid of Sherinian. He never really grabbed my attention. I think Kevin Moore should have never left.

I'm not sure in what they passed DT but it's kinda interesting to see people compare these two bands awfully a lot.... I don't get it... DT is prog while Symphony X is cheesy dragon humping power metal

Eh, more progressive power metal. Rhapsody handles the cheese factor.

My dad put it best when he said Dream Theater is jazz and Symphony X is classical.

DT must be doing something right. They're one of the few bands that got their start in the 80's and never stopped unlike the sorry ass poser bands like Motley Crue, Poison, Def Leppard, Warrant, etc. (speaking of boring)

AFAIK, none of them have been to jail for beating their wives, never had any absurd and highly publicized band breakup hissy fits, none have had to be incarcerated multiple times because they can't behave like basic human beings on a regular basis, none of them have killed or mamed any other humans, none have had to make semi-annual trips to drug rehab clinics, and none of them have had to make an ass of themselves in some ghey reality show to revive their floundering career.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Tim - I guess you're not going that Poison/Warrant gig next month, are you?

But I agree with you that it's cool to see a band that hasn't had to go through the tantrums and other troubles you mentioned over such a long career. And DT doesn't have to play their two hits at a state fair (cough, cough * Warrant *) to make some cash.
Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.

while the above statement (about warrant) is true, DT is a "love 'em" or "hate 'em" type band. i pretty much fall into the "hate 'em" category. i respect their abilities and think it is great they have been around so long, BUT i find their "songs" to be adequate at best. i WILL admit i prefer music with hooks over virtuosity and scalar-gymnastics, but i don't like hair bands either. DT seems to lack SONGS. my favorite album of theirs is the live one about the hypnosis and the girl getting killed. i like it because it is more like a broadway music than a normal DT wank-fest.
                        GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

                        and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

they have a couple of cool tunes... I like Caught In A Web or whatever it's called for example... it's a pretty cool groover
but I can't stand 'em because they have stoled so many riffs and stuff from other bands.... probably more than any other band I know
the singer sounds like a bumblebee cunt too

I like DT when they cover other people's material, so I guess I agree that they lack compelling songs.
