I'm sure they'd name someone besides Derek Sherinian - unless they took you literally when you said "shit".

Just because he surrounded himself with better musicians than he is on Planet X doesn't make HIM a better musician than either Kevin Moore or Jordan Rudess. He didn't sound that great in Dream Theater, so for whatever reason that was, in the context of DT he was subpar.
    Ron is the MAN!!!!

It's an interesting video and quite imaginitive, but I think it woulda been funnier if they had the German kid throwing a tantrum at his computer.

He's always good for a couple of laughs.

I'm sure I'll be sorry I asked, but what exactly does that sound like? ...and do bumblebees have cunts?

I hear you. DT is just too much on the 'technical' and 'clinical' side for my taste....but to each his own.

Like someone else stated, I'm waiting for them to drop the 7-string shit and get back to the progressive stuff. And I'd like to know what "riffs" they "stole" from who?

that was my intro to DT. their cover of funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding was nowhere near as good as the original. it lacked the feel and atmosphere of the original, imo.

that said, yes, i totally agree that they're all amazing players.

I'm sure you don't know what's happening in the word of keyboards right now... but it's ok... keys are gay anyway

subpar... in your opinion... maybe... who cares
when you look at all the people who has hired him (all kinds of rock giants, popstars, jazz and prog greats) they don't satisfy with subpar playing

AFAIK, none of them have been to jail for beating their wives, never had any absurd and highly publicized band breakup hissy fits, none have had to be incarcerated multiple times because they can't behave like basic human beings on a regular basis, none of them have killed or mamed any other humans, none have had to make semi-annual trips to drug rehab clinics,
So you agree they are boring JK. Actually Warrant types and DT both bore me. However there is no denying the Talent of DT.

To each his own... I enjoy the earlier stuff, especially awake. I thought that was a kick ass album with just the right amount of groove, instrument wank and complexity, cool vocals too. The Scenes album was also awesome for what it was.

They should really get a decent producer in there to help them edit some of the stuff. I have a lot of respect for those guys, obviously as instrumentalists and musicians but things started to go in the wrong direction when they got rid of Kevin Shirley and Petrucci and Portnoy started producing the albums.
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

ok, i didn't actually listen to that as i'm not on DSL right now, and loading stuff like that takes me ages, so i'll just take your word for it that it's pretty much exactly the same.
having that said, congratulations, you just bashed one of the worst DT songs in their history - at least as far as i'm concerned. i thought octavarium sucked from start to finish, and systematic chaos didn't change things to the better imho.
imho, train of thought was the last decent record they put out. some may complain it's heavy for the sake of heaviness, and the songs are structured like some modern pop metal with 5min wank sessions in between - and you're probably right about that - but still that album did it for me. maybe i just liked the heavier approach.
octavarium on the other hand sounds forced commercial to me, whereas SC sounds forced prog to me.
i also got to admit that i'm a huge fan of basically everything up to TOT, with awake, acos and sdoit being my favorites.
consequently, i'd really like you to point out some songs/song parts/riffs they stole that ended up on one of these records - although any record prior to TOT would let's say satisfy my curiosity.
and please let me just add that this is not supposed to be a challenge or an offense towards you personally; i'm merely interested in why you think of DT as one of the most shameless copycats in this genre, and what led you to this conclusion.

The real downfall of Dream Theater was them covering Master Of Puppets and deciding that they were going to start writing "metal" records. They've released nothing worthy of my dollar since Scenes (my favorite album ever).
