Guitarists with the WORST tone

Well what comes to my mind first is early Tony MacAlpine. Also later in Planet X his tone was super. Also when he played with steve vai his tone was way better than Steve's.

Steve Vai is an amazing talent, but has some of the positively flattest tone in all of rockdom. I think his old boss - Frank Zappa - said it best when he told Vai that he had the tone of a "ham sandwich".

IMHO, Metallica's tone has sucked for years. Especially Kirkster's.

Mick Mars's early Motley Crue had horrible tone. Very high-pitched and nasal. His later stuff - pretty much after SATD - was killer, though.

As to Satch, I think his tone has mostly been killer. Admittedly, though, he has overused the wah in his set-ups at different points in his career. So, if they're a turn-off for you, I can understand why you might not like some of Satch's tones through the years.

Just about anyone who's played for Ronnie James Dio, especially Craig Goldie. I have the sneaky suspicion that Ronnie intentionally f@#$s with their tone on the albums, so it doesn't detract from his vocals. And everything's so dryly mixed on the early stuff, you could gag on it.
Another is the guitars off the first Vain album. I love this album and band, but if you listen to the guitar tones, alone, they sound like shite.

Good call..that tour and solo kicked ass too..when he did flight of the bumble bee.

I always loved Steve Stevens tone on Vince Neil's exposed, and still do..even tho I don't listen to that much these days.

I'm in the Jeff Loomis school of tone..he crushes my balls!

In opposite end of this spectrum, I think John Sykes has the best tone I have heard. Especially on the Blue Murder album.

That is one of the BEST tones EVER!!! Couldn't agree more man.
