Hmm Ace, Paul Stanley, Zakk, Dimebag, JJ french, Vai,
I love Satch's tone. And i think Trowers tone on Bridge of Sighs is perfect for the song. Altho some of the other stuff is thin and kind of week. Vai's tone is just think on mist of his stuff, Dimebags too tinny, Kirk Hamster- too much wah.

OK, so, I already have one of Tim's quotes in my sig line
Do I have to delete that one, before I quote the new one?

I never was a fan of Jimmy's tone either. I do love his Stairway to heaven tone. although, I found out later that he used a Fender telecaster through a Supro amp to record that song. ...even then, he's been associated with only the Les Paul.

Hmmmm... He's pretty well associated with the Telecaster, the Les Paul, double-neck Gibson and a Danelectro.

Dude from Rage Agaisnt the Machine.
System of a Down's live tone is the worst!!
Though he's one of my favs Andy LaRoque's rythym tone is weak, but his lead tone KILLS!
                      Slayers tone sucks too.
                      Megadeth

Hey have you heard the last 2 albums? Big improvement there. I guess it's the Mike Wead factor.

how do some of you define tone? i am being serious....some of these players have a distinct sound. as much as i keep saying RR, you can tell it is him when you hear that nasally, razor-edged doo-doo sound on old ozzy songs. there is NO confusing him with jake e lee!!

so, to some of you, WHAT makes a "tone" better than another "tone"? do you have concrete, measurable criteria, or is it just how YOU would WANT to sound if you were good enough to be signed and releasing records in said band, or as a solo artist?

I think together on the rythym their tone sounds alright and chunky, but on their own they sound shite. Still makes me laugh when I see Kerry King's sig Marshall.

Steve Vai is an amazing talent, but has some of the positively flattest tone in all of rockdom. I think his old boss - Frank Zappa - said it best when he told Vai that he had the tone of a "ham sandwich".

IMHO, Metallica's tone has sucked for years. Especially Kirkster's.

Mick Mars's early Motley Crue had horrible tone. Very high-pitched and nasal. His later stuff - pretty much after SATD - was killer, though.

As to Satch, I think his tone has mostly been killer. Admittedly, though, he has overused the wah in his set-ups at different points in his career. So, if they're a turn-off for you, I can understand why you might not like some of Satch's tones through the years.
