so, to some of you, WHAT makes a "tone" better than another "tone"? do you have concrete, measurable criteria, or is it just how YOU would WANT to sound if you were good enough to be signed and releasing records in said band, or as a solo artist?
In my opinion your equipment makes your tone! This includes your pups of choice, amp, effects and of course guitars and so on etc...
Now the way someone bends notes, and picks, and plays using different techniques...That is their playing style! And everyone has one!

I find it interesting how many people get this confused!!
      I love admins!

Another vote for Randy Rhoads - I always wondered if he could hear his own tone!

Chris Impellitterri is another one - and thats 2 r's in there!

Vai also - have to agree. His recorded stuff is OK because of all the processing. Some of his live stuff was barely OK.

When I say Yngwie jamming with Satch and Vai - Yngwie's tone just burried the other two guitars. Made them sound weak and thin.

Yngwie Malmsteen - not even he can make a single coil pickup sound good.

It's only a small section, but Morello's solo in "Darkness" is decent:

Well, they say tone is mostly in the fingers, so...
(( That reminds me.... tar and feather me...but Beck's Tone SUCKS!
Always has been thin, and weird imo. I know he's supposed to be
a God and all that but imo his playing style is disjointed (i know, this
is probably the only reason he stands out) and has no melodic
content! There i said it! Lately he's gotten better...(jennifer Batten is
                        with him!!!!!!!

As in, I knew some members of the band before they moved from PA to LA.
Even after they got famous, the bass player that decided against making the move to LA (and who worked on all our amps at the store way back when) would have Bret over three or four times a year.
He came by the shop at least once... and with that one babe from the first vid.
                          mmmmmmmmmm
                          what a hottie.
I hung out downstairs (in case any customers came in) with her, while the other "hey, I'm gonna jam with Bret" types were upstairs... trying like hell to have a thorn.
                          LOL
                          The girl was awesome.
Bret was... well... kinda like you see him oh the reality show these days.
                          Very "average"

I still can't keep from changing the channel anytime a Poison song comes on the radio.

Mr. Yohn, are you still alive? how are you?
Marlin, I think was your first name.

                          hehehe

I'll never forget the story you told me about going out to LA to see your ex Poison bandmates... and they were digging around the couch cushions for a quarter so they could get some Dunkin Donuts coffee.

                          hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe
*** How come on the Howard Stern show Brett told him they were very
lucky, that their management was honest, and they still had a ton o' dough left today, from the 80's? He told Howard (pre "Rock of Love" tv
show too!) That he had more than $10Million !! So which is true?

Agreed! One of the fastest players to "Know right off" who they are within 2 seconds is Carlos Santana..you instantly know it's him!
Maybe that does mean you win, in the "Not like anyone else in the world" tone contest? SRV is in that group also imo.

Yeah monster in your face shitty tone!

                                You may like it - I don't.

Way too processed. Vai uses the whole kitchen sink when it comes to processing. I just think it destroys the natural sound of a guitar.

I like gain and reverb and thats about it. I like players who work on using their fingers and picking attack and vibrato to get tone - harmonics, overtones, etc...

IMO some of the very best tone ever to come out of a guitar was done by Michael Schenker. Listen to the song Save Yourself sometime. Simply awesome tone.

I know I know - Schenker uses a wah pedal and runs his guitar through it which gives him much of his tone. And it does sound great. But its not like his is running through an Eventide and TC Delay and the other stuff.

Saw Satch 3 or 4 times. Very cool. But again super processed. Lots of squeals, shrills and whatever else you want to call some of those sounds.

I like a more unprocessed sound and a player who uses his technique to create dynamics in the sound.
