Guitarists with the WORST tone

Jimmy Page's tone sounded like shit when you could hear a single guitar on it's own....but layered in a mix? AMAZING. A lesson here?

I think the lesson is...."it can be fixed in the mix"



Good tone is really a matter of opinion... which is a point made super clear reading the "toneless" names mentioned.

Any New/current/young Metal Band

Too Much Krank And Esp Combos

Modern Tone Sucks Balls

In Fact Tone Since The Ealry 90s Sucks With A Few Exceptions

I actually like the Slipknot Tone on Vol 3 and I am not a Nu or Slipknot fan, I actually ahte the masks but I really liked the Rhythm tone.

I think Satch ahd good tone on Crystal Planet album but other than that just really piss poor

I don't really dig Jeff Beck's tone sometimes but it is by no means bad, just not my thing.

Lukather sounds good in everything I've heard - can't understand what's wrong with his tone...

Randy's tone could have been better in many spots but overall, I think it worked well in many instances too. I can't imagine a different tone sounding "right" for the opening riffs to Crazy Train or Flying High Again. The clean and dirty tones used throughout Diary of a Madman are perfect for that song.

On it's own he may not have had the best tone, but in context...what he did with it and how he integrated it into certain songs makes it special IMO.

And anyone who says that Jeff Beck or Steve Lukather have bad tone clearly doesn't get what the fundamentals of good tone are. Tone may be subjective to some degree, but the fundamentals really aren't so much.

Steve lukather from what i've heard has pretty terrible tone recorded and live..

There are plenty of people who have bad tone dime's tone was always pretty naff but his playing made up for it same with RR and a fair few others...

There was plenty of naff overprocessed tone around in the late 80's early 90's....

Well what comes to my mind first is early Tony MacAlpine. Also later in Planet X his tone was super. Also when he played with steve vai his tons was way better than Steve's.

macalpines tone was pretty good on maximum security. On the g3 tour when i saw them, his tone sucked. Sounded like a tele with tons of gain thru a 10" speaker.
