  • New Satriani - anyone else underwhelmed?

So I pre-ordered the new Satriani and I gave the new album a spin today.

    It is shockingly mediocre!!

Compared to Steve Steven's new CD its almost embarrassing.

It makes me feel that Satch is hugely resting on his laurels and most likely puts out music just to sell amps.

I gave it a listen on the bus today and it didn't grab me like Crystal Planet did. Couldn't keep me interested for longer than 2 minutes. I'll listen again though just to make sure.

I like it a lot! It is slightly mellower and a little more funky than before but as he stated in a press release, it's just a reflection of where he's at right now. I wouldn't say it was better than any of his previous 3 cd's but definitely more focused than "Engines of Creation" or the self titled mumbo jumbo.

I love it, it's just great satriani for my money. The new bassist comes through clearly, and its just a continuation of his style imo

are you guys referring to Super Colossal or is there a brand new one out?

oh and thanks for the heads-up on the new Steve Stevens cd, that guy is one of my favorite players - what a talent!

Yes, it's called Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock. Guitar Centers are stocking an exlusive cd/dvd combo if you are interested. I picked mine up last night at the Chicago location where I also attended his clinic. It was great! He played 6 songs and talked to the crowd then signed autographs. The DVD has footage from the very short tour he did last fall for the 20th Anniversary of the Surfin' cd...so if you couldn't see him live, it's a great way to see what you missed.

You gotta cut him some slack...after all, what it this his 15th album?
He's no Paul McCartney! The ol'e juices are probably just drying up?
Im surprised it didnt happen 4 albums ago? First 3 are the bomb imo...
that's all i really listen too, and the G3 live stuff.

The last 3 songs on the CD are IMO the best ones and the ones to listen to first.
I attended his GC clinic in Natick last week.
It was pretty cool to see him up close and listen to some of his stories.
I've always been a huge Satch fan and probably always will be.
Although I thought Super Collosal was Just horrific.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

I have a feeling it's either going to be a love/hate thing...but don't judge the entire cd from this one song. I think he chose the most corny or catchiest song (depending on how you look at it) for a potential release as a single that would appeal to the average rock fan...not to all the real guitar geeks like us. There are some songs on this cd with really GOOD chord structures, and IMO that's where his true talent shines.

Crystal Planet is unbelievable, that was just an amazing collection of ripping songs.
A Train of Angels is one for the ages.

I agree that Super Colossal was just OK. some cool ones, but nothing to blow you away.

I thought Super Colossal was pretty good. Not great, but I listened to it often enough.

I just downloaded the new one last night, and have to say that I haven't been impressed so far. Maybe it'll grow on me with a few more listens, but right now I'm thinking this is his weakest effort in a long time.
