  • Good To Be Bad - Whitesnake

Anyone listened to the new Whitesnake CD ?

After 10 days of (almost) constant stream of it, I'd say: Okay !

Not a "masterpiece" IMO; a bit predictable - like the "I heard that before" syndrome. But good enough to make me really look forward to see them in July !

anyway, it sounded like the shit that whitesnake was made of back in the slide it in era, lotta guitar and loud

lotta guitar and loud - yes, that's what it's about

Doug Aldrich played most of (all of ... ?) the guitars; I don't think Reb Beach had a lot to do with the recording sessions.

Aldrich is never unpleasant to listen to, and David's voice isn't shot. The songs are a bit weak, but compared to a lot of other stuff, I'll take it!

I really enjoyed the record. Doug Aldrich really shines and the rest of the band is solid. The songs aren't perhaps ground-breaking in terms of being something new and unusual but darn it, they are like a pair of good jeans: they feel comfortable and familiar.

The one thing I hear that I also hear on the new Dokken disc ("Lightning Strikes Again") is that the vocalist is aging quite noticably. While I think Don Dokken's voice is far more ravaged, you can still hear that rasp in David's voice. That's not a condemnation of either guy (either still sings better than I can...), but it is noticeable on both discs.

As for guitars on the new WS, the solos sound like Doug to me with maybe one or two possible exceptions. So I wonder, too, how much Reb was involved in the recording. Indeed, all of the songwriting is credited to Coverdale and Aldrich.

Bottom line: I loved "Slide It In" and "1987" though not "Slip of the Tongue" so much. I also really liked the last 2 live CD's that Coverdale did with Aldrich and Beach. If those statements match your tastes, I think you'll like "Good to be Bad".

I'll have to get hold of this. I'm fully expecting Whitesnake to blow Leppard off the stage when I see them in June.

Am I missing something, or does their "World Tour" not include ANY dates in North America?

Maybe it's sort of like the "World Series" that only includes baseball teams from the US and possibly Canada.

It's MUCH better than 1997's Restless Heart ..Nowhere near as great as the '87 classic w/ Sykes.

Aldrich is my favorite player, has been since Lion.

Having said that, I would way rather have seen him do another Burning Rain record, or stay with Dio. Whitesnake is boring, always 3 good songs and a bunch of ballads and fillers. Just like this record.

I think it's a pretty solid effort. Definitely not in league with "Slide It In" or "Whitesnake" but still solid.

As for the guitar playing, Reb only contributed 2 solos (he recorded 4 but only 2 were used). He was bummed that his other two weren't used as he thought they were his best ones as well as being better than what Doug laid down Doug is Whitesnake's music director so he had the final say.

Ralph, do you have both Burning Rain cds "s/t" and "Pleasure to burn" ..and Doug's "Alter Ego".

I like Doug's solo cd better than Reb's "Masquerade" BTW. Even tho I think Reb is an incredible player. Doug just seems to fit WS's writing like a glove. He's much closer to John Sykes in style than Adrian Vandenburg..

Do you know who I'd think would fit better in WS besides the obvious J Sykes/G Moore..John Norum. I could see Norum gelling with Aldrich better than Reb in that camp. Reb would've made a good Ozzy player back in the day IMO!

Bill - don't forget Doug's other band after Lion: Bad Moon Rising. There's a 3-CD set that encompasses most of their songs.

Norum would have been an interesting to choice to pair with Aldrich in WS. It would have been dueling Les Pauls.

killer playing and some cool ideas and the best voice in rock but the songs aren't really memoriable.... WS needs Sykes period!
