Welcome back Ron..you fucker!
The new Testament cd is a great introduction into "gruffer" territory. Chuck Billy actually uses a "death vox" style on a couple songs. Their new one is growing on me.
Anyone interested in investigating heavier metal styles. I'll be happy to point you in good directions. I got friends and my wife into this stuff. To the point my wife rarely likes clean vocals and traditional/classic metal styles. She prefers heavier styles and can tell the difference between good and shit death vocals. Trust me, it takes just as much talent to excel in this style as any other. The problem is there is so much bad music that is promoted..turning people off or on immediately. These are TRENDS or bands jumping on bandwagons. True metal will always remain underground..going virtually unnoticed for decades, if not forever by mainstream. This is so clear to see from my perspective.. watching the mainstream while living underground. I constantly hear both and therefore know the blatant difference. Trends come and go..Metal's heart remains no matter how it may evolve.
So, having been there..I know important "crossover" bands. I don't expect people on a steady diet, of Firewind, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Nocturnal Rites, Iced Earth, Kamelot, Helloween, and 80's inpired traditional metal ect..to like Deicide, Vital Remains, Cannibal Corpse, Bloodbath, Cryptopsy, Krisiun, Hate Eternal and etc. All good bands..but enjoyable as jumping into an ice cold pool..that's a very gradual thing with the RIGHT bands that becomes one of your faves.
Please..don't go for these metalcore hacks. These poser tone deaf, cliche, toughguy screamers that can't sing either style well at all. Another pseudo metal promoted just as nu, rap metal, and. Ever notice what is popular at that time truly sucks in hindsight, and sounds dated. People always aquire a taste for what is convenient, because its "catchy". So don't buy into now if you won't like it later. Especially in the era of myspace/youtube. I've bumped heads here with loyal trendfans. There was ALOT of "Nu" and Rap metal guys here that swore it was true metal..WRONG!! Not their fault, they just didn't know better. ALL trends have expiration dates, good music is timeless..grunge, nu, rap metal, emo and metal core..ect have expiration dates...while my loyaty to metal, and my convictions remain constant.
Metal was..is..and will be...metal."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

To people that think the growling vocals are "posturing to make them look hard", try watching interviews with guys like Karl Sanders from Nile, Chuck Schuldiner from Death, or watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxVCjW-W2YQ These guys are normal, fun guys. Sure there are bands that try to act hard and evil, but even Glen Benton is more amusing than anything else.
Ignoring an entire genre of music because you think it's "posturing" is very childish.
Hell I even listen to the first two Poison albums, and you don't get much more posturing than that.

I'm not familair with you..lets get aquainted.
BTW, I see that we're both fans of Nocturnus, so that's a good start.

I think most metal bands are nothing like as serious as they pretend to be, or as their music portrays them.
Maiden always seemed very serious on their albums but think of "Mission from 'Arry" or "Sheriff of Huddersfield".
Saying bands are posturing is just fucking nonsense. Anyone who's been into this music for a few years would realise how stupid a statement that is.
Metal is, and always will be, ultimately about fun. That includes death metal as I showed with the Vader video.

The funniest example was a local band I saw doing their soundcheck, years ago. The singer was one inch higher than a friggin Smurf, but was doing the Cookie Monster thing. "RARARARARARARARA........" When the check was over, in his regular, wimpy, almost pre-pubescent voice, he says into the mike:" Um, can I have some more monitors?" I thought I was gonna piss my pants! All the grimacing and grunting in the world ain't gonna make you a badass.I'm not Ron!

I used to use cookie monster vocals, but haven't done any vocals in 6 years. I don't particularly like coughing my guts up every 10 minutes after a recording session.Last edited by wilkinsi; 05-10-2008, 04:40 PM.Fuck ebay, fuck paypal

I ignore the genre because I think the GENRE is childish. MY choice.

I'm 100% certain that kid wasn't trying to be a "badass". But people like you will continue to see things to suit your own little agenda. You thought Poison were shit? Your username is RacerX. Give me a fucking break. I love the "Superheroes" album, and Paul Gilbert is a genius, but RacerX songs are no better than the early Poison ones. Massive guitar solos are just as much about showing off as death metal vocals. You don't seem to understand that.
You have a very fucked up way of looking at music and I'd suggest to you, you really need to grow up. You must have been drunk when you posted that shit (unless you really ARE an 18 year old kid). Either way, hold your head in shame and grow a set of testicles.
If you think death metal is shit, SAY SO, instead of trying to come up with silly anecdotes which just show you to be a total penis.
"Hey everyone, I saw a death metal band today, they were shit, cos the guy singing was YOUNG! Everyone knows bands are shit and gay unless they're over 45. Ha ha, how ridiculous eh?"
Pfft.Last edited by MartinBarre; 05-10-2008, 01:58 PM.
