  • Opeth - Watershed

Anyone happen to pick this album up? I've heard that it's decent, everyone says half the album is good, the other half is just about average.

Which is a pretty big shock to me, Opeth is an amazing band and every album they've put out has been superb, and I don't think I could accept anything of theirs that isn't at the same level as all their other stuff.

    Thoughts?

It's a fantastic album IMO, just a lot more experimental.

Agreed it's quite experimental but for me Opeth can't do anything wrong, I buy their albums blindly

I think there breaking through in popularity..prolly trying to be a little more accessable. My dad likes Deliverance..he would hate anything esle..so.

On tour with Dream Theater..that wouldn't been the case a few years ago.

I've seen them for the first time on the DT tour. They sounded better than the previous two bands, but still awful by any standard. To give them credit the DT did not sound too good either, probably 5-6 out of 10.

While they played confidently, and actually paid attention to how things sound... my first impression was that it is still fairly primitive guitar-work wise. Well, that was my first and only encounter with them. Did I miss something?

Opeth are much more groove-oriented and focused on atmosphere than interested in playing difficult rhythms and leads.

That explains why I was disinterested I guess.

I saw Opeth last night, and they were far from awful.

no, I did not say they were awful. I said the sound was. I.e. - the keys were completely lost in the mix, and overall you could only guess what the guitars were playing. The vocal came through OK though, especially on the cleaner parts.

Ah, bad mix then. You should definitely check out one of their albums. I think a good intro album is Blackwater Park, specifically the song "The Drapery Falls." It's a little bit of everything Opeth, and is the song that got me more interested in the band. Of course, if you're out to find the next Petrucci or the next Romeo, then Opeth is definitely not your band.
