  • My '76 Alembic bass owned by Eric Carmen

OMFG ..My wife bought me a bass for my birthday in 1989. It was in a local paper, and happened to be Eric Carmen's '76 Alembic Exploiter bass. His parents had it hanging on a wall in Bay Village ..they said it was in a video but I never knew which one..with the miracle of youtube..I found it..!!!

Here it is..My '76 Alembic Exploiter bass. http://youtube.com/watch?v=43Y155i2XzA

It was the most beautiful bass I've ever owned for a afew years. It had two truss rod adjustments. Unfortunately, the fretboard cracked from the 12 fret to the very end. A friend helped patch it up with wood putty and stain. I sold it for $800. It didn't sound very good at all tho..but I wanted to keep it original..

I took that money and bought me a new Ken Smith..which I loved and played for years!

I know..I thougt the same thing ..In his special olympics voice.."Caaaaartmaaaan..."

Yeah, that bass went from "All By Myself" to "Wrathchild"!!

I wished I kept that bass, but I do have a few photos of it I'm glad I took!!!. Guys, that thing was like a peice of fuggin' furniture. I lemon oiled it every week..maybe too much lemon oil. I was traumatized when that ginormous crack suddenly appeared!!

I went to a lovely home in Bay Village. A very nice elderly couple had it hanging on their wall with gold records around it. I was a punkass metal pud..but I have "charm", so they liked me. They were asking $800..I offered them $600. They called their son and he said $700..so we agreed to meet in the middle...for $650. My wife put $600 towards it. That bass had a list price of over 4K back in '76!!! That was alot of money at that time. So, I thought I had the best bass in the world. Price and looks are not everything. That thing was so uncomfortable to play, it cramped my forearm. When you see John E or Eric playing them..everything is so far away..the reach is ridiculous. Besides their pups and pretty tone woods Maple/Mahogony I believe.. made for a very weak/lifeless sounding bass even with fresh Rotosounds on it. I had a G & L 2000 at that time..so that was my main bass. The Ken Smith was my second favorite bass..I went thru ALOT of very nices basses to discover I like G & L best!

ummm maybe I shouds puts this ins the bass section..but nobody looks there.

I didn't give a fuck about Eric Carmen at that time..still not a fan. But he did write ALOT of "hits"..big time hits..with a bullet, and my old bass is immortalized in that video!

At least we can be reunited this way..

Cool bass. I'd never heard of that guy. I could have done without that song, though. :ROTF:

              I know..

But its the only place where I could see it. He just used it for THAT video..that thing was never "played"..it was prestine when I got it.

I just discovered the video today. They told me he did a video with it. Youtube rules..I went thru a few of his vids..I didn't even know he wrote "All by myself"..

Whenever I think of that song..I think of that shower scene with Harlan Williams in "Half Baked". When he's singing that song into the bar of soap and drops the soap..and Tommy Chong protects him because he's his bitch..."Yeah..yeah, I'm his bitch!!!"...:ROTF: :ROTF: :ROTF:

LOL I didn't know he wrote All By Myself either. I always liked that song, and I also think of the shower scene in Half Baked now when I hear it.

Nice. Kenny's butthole was in constant jeopardy.

Awesome looking bass...in an expensive piece of furniture kind of way. I'm surprised it didn't sound good, Entwhistle used to own on one of those.
