I checked out a non-live clip, and this band seems to have more going on than the average "vacuum cleaner with drums", but the vomit-ist (vocalist seems too kind) ruins it the first time he opens his mouth.

I keep trying to get into these guys since there is so much positive vibe about them on the net but I just can't get into it. I don't hate it but I can't see myself listening to this again and again. After watching the video, I'm trying to understand the point of the 8 string guitar. The guy never touched the 8th string.

I think this stuff would sound even more brutal if they tuned their guitars normally or at least close (within a step). Detuning that far down kills the dynamics...the guitars don't "pop" because they are out of their place in the sonic spectrum and end up competing with the bass and drums for space.

I'll turn my 17 year old son on to this but add me to the "I don't get it" list. Different vocals might sway me, but as it stands they sound like a joke to me.

I have only two of their CDs... Chaosphere and Nothing. I love the song Spasm (from the Nothing CD) where the drummer sings. Here's a video with lyrics to go along; though, you can understand them fine.

Because, as far as I know, when this song came out (1995) they weren't yet using 8 string guitars....they were using Ibanez 7 string guitars tuned down 1/2 step. So they are using the 7 "highest" strings of their 8 string guitars in this video.

I haven't listened to much Meshuggah at all, but I have been told that some of the bands I like have "Meshuggah-like" riffage. I enjoyed that clip, maybe I should check out some more. Any suggestions on a good album to start with?
Catch 33 followed by Destroy Erase Improve then Re-Nothing and wash it down with some Obzen.

This song is from an album before they took up the 8 string, I believe.
Edit: Chad just beat me to the punch... +1!

I started with Obzen and so far I can't put it down. One of the best purchases of the year for me.
The stuff I heard from Destroy Erase Improve didn't grab me as much so far, though the middle part of Future Breed Machine is great.

I picked up Obzen when it came out as I work with a guy that digs them. The vocals don't really do it for me. I find the music interesting outside of that and Bleed is the heaviest song I've heard in years...

Regarding Bleed.....I give major kudos to any guitar player that has the stamina to pull that whole song off. And a drummer who can pull it off.......from another planet?

Weirdly enough, I've never listened to Meshuggah before. They're not bad, and I enjoy this type of music, but I guess I'm more into the straight ahead hardcore type stuff like Agnostic Front, Hatebreed, Madball, et al. Now there's some breakdowns for you!

                              Here's some Agnostic:
