  • The return of the guitarsolo in the charts

Okay let's be honest, the later part of the nineties was a pretty bad time for guitarsolos, with Nu-metal bands and pop-punk bands abandoning the thing in whole. People tend to blame the alt rock movement but let's be honest, Kurt Cobain DID play guitar solos, not really virtuosic ones but he DID play solos. Currently with bands like Killswitch engage, Dragonforce and Children of Bodom riding high, guitarsolos are back in full force.

So let's talk about the bands responsible the hit records that brought the solo back.

Often referred to as the Backstreet boys of Nu-metal, Crazy Town nevertheless played ozzfest and with their song "Hurt you so bad" brought out one of the earliest examples of the re-birth of the guitar solo.

When I first heard Sum41 I dimissed them as just another pop-punk band, but then I heard Dave "Bownsound" Baksh do this on their single "in too deep"...

...and I went, well what do you know, he's got chops and isn't afraid to use them...

So let's name more early examples of the re-birth of the guitar solo.

And one more thing: PLEASE don't turn this into a bashing thread. I'm so sick of reading topics where people go "they suck because they don't play like (fill in whoever's name)" The two solos I mentioned are not anywhere near to what Steve Vai is capable of, I know that. So let's make this a fun thread.

      Santana's Supernatural

Alter Bridge or whatever the Creed guy's new band was called

Godsmack has one or two solos in songs

Avenged Sevenfold has quite a bit of actual shredding

Agreed with the Alter bridge guy...he smokes!

And everyone around here, seems to slam "Bullet for my Valentine"...
but these guys have some great chops..and the riffs are outstanding imo.
        Solid soloing too

are you talking about guitar solos in the charts, or just the return of guitar solos generally? If the former, how much of the music of KsE, Dragonforce & Children of Bodom is getting in the charts? And for that matter, who gives a shit about the charts anyway?

If the latter, the guitar solo never went away. You just couldn't sit on your hands and wait for MTV to feed it to you - if you wanted solos, you had to go looking for them.

Disturbed seems to be adding in a few. Evanescence has had a few, moreso with Ben Moody. HIM is getting somewhat popular, and their latest album, Venus Doom, has some nice solos.

Thanks G..I really didn't want to waste another brain cell on this topic...Its not like I have an endless supply. I need to save a few for important matters..like deciding what I like more when I'm jerkin it..bubblebutts or all natural slapularies.

I remember watching Some Kind of Monster and the solo discussion there...

Lars said something to the likes of "We've decided not to put any solos on the record because that's kind of dated"

Kirk: "Can I just say that's bullshit? Because if we don't play solos that's really going to date the record to this specific period, and besides it's being trendy"

                    Go Kirk.

I'll make this easy and put this to bed once and for all with the help of youtube, I didn't have that luxury several years ago. Exactly when did the guitar solo allegedly go away..name the year(s).

Like G stated..are we talkin' what the media dictates or the real world?

Nevermind ..the title of this thread says it all... "In the charts"..the mainstream.

Gotcha..yeah, I call that entire era the Ebonic Plague. While that was goin' on I was too busy shreddin and trying to keep up with all the players out there kicking my ass and still do..too many to list. I couldn't list all of them if I wanted to...I wouldn't know where to start. I didn't listen to radio..that's pure torture..I'd rather choose waterboarding..blub..blub...blub!

I am trying to pin down just who started describing solos and "wanking", or "noodling".

I know for sure the whole attitude was propagated by the snotty Rolling Stone Mag crowd, who thought John Lennon was The Greatest Rock God of all time. Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but the Beatles were a great Pop band, then just went freaky
                          with Ono inspired sickness.

No, it happened sometime in the late sixties. The early shredders like Alvin Lee started to get pissed on by more "sophisticated" songwriters. Then rock came back, and so did the solo's EVH, Rhoads, and seriously great shredders. Then it came time to actually have to market the stuff, so it became packaged nonsense, except those fringes that BillZ speaks of. It comes and goes, but it has been around far too long to be a fad.

The exec's try to kill it, but it won't die.
This is the classical music of two hundred years in the future!

Oh, and sorry, Blazer, it was supposed to be a positive rant.
I don't listen to the radio, either.
Too many choices in good vintage music to bother with much of anything new.

One of Nevermore's goals was to bring back the guitar solo and nobody could do it better IMO!. They stated that about 12 years ago and said that for years. They inspired many bands that are breaking into the mainstream..too bad they didn't get the credit tho ('cept for some band interviews). They attempted a "radio" song in 2000 "believe in nothing"..with an album version and a radio edit version..it would be a hit today if promoted. I don't get it really. That's why I don't bother. Radio doesn't exist in my world. I always hated most popular music..its so fuggin' trendy. All trends have expiration dates but genuinely great music is timeless!!! That's why your seeing alot of old metal bands surfacing and many new bands coping their vibe.
