  • Loved that first album, second one was a bit average.

Did not know that he'd left the band! Interesting... his brother the other guitarist must be pretty pissed off...

    • I think the singer got sober. Or that was the excuse he used to get away from his brother.
      I'm angry because you're stupid

      • Has there been a time since the Norlin Era that people haven't complained about Gibson's QC?

This thread has me thinking and I think I mentioned something about it before but I'll go into more detail. Where I was from, dudes didn't like hair metal. Period. No and's, if's or buts about it. Hair metal was not something a dude would say they liked. Not only in my circle of friends but with the others too. It was considered way to wussy. It really was. I hated the shit out of it. There were some bands that were acceptable to like. Motley Crue, Dokken and Ratt were about it. The first real big bands besides Quiet Riot. We didn't consider Judas Preist hair metal. We didn't consider Ozzy hair metal because he wasn't at that point. So those bands were cool. But nobody liked Poison, Warrant, Bon Jovi, White Lion, Cinderella, any of those bands.

Chicks liked those bands. There were bands we liked then didn't, Def Leppard comes to mind. They changed their sound to sell albums. Can't blame them but I don't have to like it either.

There really was 2 phases of hair metal. The first phase which consisted of bands like Motley Crue and Ratt and Dokken and Bon Jovi and Def Leppard and Quiet Riot. And there was the second phase. Bands like Poison, Warrant, Winger, Cinderella and White Lion.

It was cool to like bands from the first phase, not really the second. The second were copycats of the first. Bands that record companies scoured the nation for. Looking for that right look. The first made it on balls alone. I think that's a point about hair metal that we have not really touched on. And even though Bon Jovi were really in that first phase, nobody liked them. The guitarist wasn't good enough and Jon looked too much like a chick.

Not that it was gospel everywhere but I think there is a reason Beavis and Butthead wear the AC/DC and Metallica shirts and Stewart (was that his name?) wore the Winger shirt. That show didn't lie.

It wasn't until recently that I went out and bought the Poison greatest hits (used) and some others to see if I missed anything. I really didn't. Bubble gum pop metal is what it sounds like to me. But I still take shit from a buddy for buying the Poison CD. Some things never change.
Yeah, i would agree with most of this, although i did like white lion, cause vito smoked. We used to bag on the gay pink sleeved jacket that mike tramp (nice name) wore. As to the resurgence of hair metal? Youd be suprised, i think. I teach guitar, and EVERY one of my 13-15 year old students is listening to ozzy, maiden, priest, gnr, kiss, VH, etc. I only have one student that even has an interest in downtuning, and he likes christian death metal, and lamb of god. At least im doing my part to try to turn out a new generation of shredders, haha. Well, maybe not shredders, but at least they think playing solos is cool.
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

That's good news man. Gives me hope for all the young guitarists out there.

I agree that Vito was pretty good. But damn if I couldn't get by that fuckin' singer Mike Tramp.

Didn't you just want to punch him in the face? All those freakin' closeups of his face in the videos? Who were they selling to with all those closeups? Not us dudes, I guarentee you that. They were selling to women.

The only real song I ever dug by them was their version of Radar Love, Vitos solo in that is very good, IMHO.

But maybe there is something wrong with me.

            • King Diamond singing Radar Love on the Black Rose CD was pretty surreal.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

              • Being 38 and actually liking SOME of the hair bands I thought I might chime in again and make a few statements.
Hair metal was played out until they got down to only the bands that could put on makeup and look pretty. It should have died out when they got down to the bands who only wrote one good song.
                Few thoughts:
                1. Bon Jovi stills sells out arenas
                2. Please don't let Poison be the one band that everyone remembers from that generation. They had only one song that I could listen too if I wanted to here a sad sad song.
I even went to the world series of rock. loved the first 4 bands and walked out when poison came on. Worse live band ever followed closly by Skid Row( Did like their music though).
                3. Def leppard on their Yeah! tour sold 19,000+ seats here in Chicago. Ticket price with fees $98. Not too bad for a band that is washed up. They sold out a lot of dates on that tour.
                4. Poison vs. Slipknot- When I look up tour sales for these 2 bands (2007for poison and 2005 for slipknot which are the last numbers latest). They sold about the same number of tickets. Poison played bigger venues.
today it is tough for my to find new bands to listen too. I try to listen new bands and I am starting to like bands from the previous generation( sign of my age maybe).
Out of the Nu generation slipknot is one of my favorites. Corey Taylor is one of my favorite vocalists of all time.
I can't get past the cookie monster vocals of 99% of the new bands and the same drum beat in almost all of the them too. Since most Nu metal isn't radio friendly, what do kids these days listen too? Either they have gone back to the 70/80's music or they listen too hip/hop. good job nu metal guys on carrying the metal torch.
Did you try swallowing it and that's why your voice sounds like that.
oh and I thought except for Uncle Tom's Cabin warrant sucked big time.

Yes, the WL Radar Love cover smoked.

Good post! And I never saw Skid Row live, but their first album was brilliant, second was good, third was ruined by that asshole Bob Rock.
I just use Poison as an example in my posts because everyone knows who they were. There were plenty of hair metal bands who had some good party tunes. Even if I can't think of any other than Poison.
