I'd heard that a lot of the guitar parts were played by Grohl as well, because Kurt was busy nodding off.

I also think that Heavy Metal did need shooting in the early part of the 90s'. It had become bloated, corporate and needed a kick up its arse! Much the same way punk did to rock in the 70s'. Just another one of life's cycles.
Fwopping, you know you want to!

And to address some of the other silliness being said in this thread, just because Viv may be technically more skilled than many of the artists with signature Gibsons doesn't make him a better promoter for the brand. Talent and skill rarely equal popularity, whereas popularity does equal sales...which is what an artist guitar is typically all about for the manufacturer.
But what I'm saying here is that guitars are targeted for sales towards guitar players, not the average listener who is not necessarily a musician. And among guitar players I think Viv Campbell is held im much higher esteem and therfore my assumption that a Viv Campbell model would be a much better seller than a Dave Grohl model.

I guess it's only an "Inspired By" guitar. Not a production piece. Still pretty cool.

About who's held in higher esteem? I guess it depends on who you ask. My wife would say Dave Grohl.
Again, see my previous post. If your wife plays guitar then thats fine but if she is only a casual listener, she is not what translates into guitar sales for Gibson or any other guitar manufacturer. BTW, thanks for pointing the inspired by guitar, I thought you guys were saying there is Grohl sig model. Whew, that scared me!

Bill, I'm shocked to hear you say this I saw Dio his last time in Cleveland along with several other friends of mine who are musicians. They all agreed with me that Goldy was pretty horrible. He was not able to play 90% of the Viv Campbell leads. Basically the songs got butchered! Dio himself OTOH, what a voice! That guy's vocals can over power the entire band. One of the best live if not THE best live vocals ever!

that may be true of many of JCFers, who grew up listening to metal & hard rock in the 80s. But young guitarists, guys in their teens or 20s now, would probably have little idea of who Viv is. Maybe their parents like soft cock rock, or their mum got the new Def Leppard album for mother's day, or they're digging back into metal history a bit like guys my age might've done with Led Zep or Sabbath and discovered stuff like Dio. But most of them would have a much better idea of who Grohl is, even if they consider the Foo Fighters too mainstream or sellout corporate rock or whatever.
            Hail yesterday

I saw viv with whitesnake in the 80's and with def leppard 2 years ago. I saw dio with goldie back in the 80's. Goldie is a good guitar player but not in the same league as Viv.
It sucks to see Viv in DL since he did take the #2 guitar spot.

Foo's are selling out the biggest arena in Iowa.

                Figure that one out.
Don't bag the State Fair circuit, man!! That's a big billing out here in the Plains!!

Nobody probably sees Grohl as a virtuoso but at this time, and recent times, whatever he is playing gets much more exposure to the public than Viv. They are all over the video channels, miscellaneous awards shows, etc.

So an established player may not buy Gibson because of Grohl but I bet there are many parents getting their 12 year old kid their first guitar and the kid wants a Gibson regardless of the specs because they are a Foo Fighter fan.

Viv's window for a sig model has long since passed.

He's probably in line behind Tom Keifer now on the Gibson sig development list.

                    BUT

he is a terrible songwriter. Ever listened to some of his solo stuff (Craig Goldie's Ritual)? It is just horrible.

My point was that all of the "classic" Dio songs were on the records that Vivian played on. He was brilliant for those few years and then lost all the fire imo.

Nah, I think it's all fair game. Someone mentioned that Lep sold way more albums than Grohl has, I had to remind that person that Grohls first band sold over 50 million records. I think that's fair.

As for Goldy, I saw him in the Sacred Heart tour in Philly. (That concert is on DVD) I thought he was OK. What I really rememeber from him that night was a white Warlock. So his guitar made a bigger impression than his playing.

I also dig Grohl because, like someone else pointed out, he remembers where he came from. Go look at that trailer for Lemmy again, who is the first person to talk? Dave Grohl. He gives props to all the bands he listened to when he was a kid. Probot anyone?

And Dave took me to see Motorhead in LA at House Of Blues on Sunset Blvd. How fuckin' cool is that? Pretty damn cool.

But I almost got yelled at for fucking with his Trinny Lopez models. But that's another story.
                      I'm angry because you're stupid

I don't really have anything against Zakk. I didn't fall for that .357 scam.

But his behavior can be labled as bazzar at times.

Since popularity is the driving factor here, can the Hannah Montana signature model Les Paul be far behind? Hey, she sells way more records these days than either Foo Fighters or Def Leppard. That must mean she's really good.
