To me my generation of players (80's guys) built off the foundation of Page, Hendrix, Blackmore and strived to get better technically, better sounding, etc. Then came the 90's (i'm generalizing here, I realize there are exceptions) and it was like all the musicians took the short bus to school. No solos, and if there were any, they sucked. No harmonies, no melodies, no thought about what your sound was like. But hey, it's just my opinion on the downfall of songwriting and musicianship since the early 90's.

Yes, we come from the same school!"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!
"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

I would say he "came out" of the 90's.
Just because a guitarist doesn't play solos doesn't mean they are not playing guitar. I dig solos too but for fucks sake, dudes like CC Deville and Snake Sabo and Jeff LaBar and Vinnie Vincent and That douchebag from Pretty Boy Floyd pretty much ran the solo into the ground.
Not only was the "grunge" movement against the look, it was against the sound. They wouldn't have got so popular of metal hadn't become a complete joke.
Who here thinks James Taylor is a good guitarist? I've never heard him shred.
(I can't stand James Talyor myself, just the only example I could think of)
So you slam Grohl because he doesn't play solos? Pretty fuckin' narrow look at music.I'm angry because you're stupid

I agree with that, but I didn't here too much rhythm playing/riff writing that I found inspiring either. A lot of it was the same old bar chord type stuff (Nirvana recycling a Boston riff for example) that we'd heard many times before...just packaged with more anger and angst and a different vocal and production style. Then there were the drop D wonders playing their single finger root/5th power chords all day long...not too inspiring to me.
That said, music is subjective and I'm sure I like my fair share of what others would consider go garbage...I don't have to respect the player to appreciate a cool song. My point is aimed at the guitar playing specifically, not the overall package.

Rupe,
Just because it doesn't speak to you, doesn't mean it's not music or viable. I can't stand James Taylor, like I said before, but I'd never go so far as to say he's not a musician. (Not that you have Rupe, just making a point)
I'll admit it, I think Korn's first 3 albums were fuckin' great. No solos. No intricate guitar lines. Drop D type playing. But damn some of those breakdowns got me going. They still do. So while Munky and Head are not in the same vein as Vai and Satch, I still think they rocked hard on those 3 albums. After that, it got a bit spotty.
I also like Limp Bizcuts first album 3 Dollar Bill Y'all. I thought that had some cool shit on it.
I also like The Deftones. Some cool stuff they have done without shredding.
I also dig hed (P.E.), but that's more of a "I'll take my dick out and shove it in your face" kinda thing. (The first 2 albums are classics, IMHO)
So while they all don't come from the Hendrix, Page, Clapton school of guitarplaying doesn't mean they suck big balls. They just might not speak to you. And that's cool too.I'm angry because you're stupid

Read my post more closely...especially this part:

Repeat: I didn't find much in the way of inspiring GUITAR PLAYING in the 90's but I still found that I liked some of the songs. I think you are essentially saying the same thing.
