  • You know you probably haven't heard of him but theres this paul gilbert guy that plays guitar too, I'm gonna have to start a thread and see if anyone else here knows him!

Ironically it was loomis that broke the mould and allowed me to love the guitarwanking/neoclassical/sweep stuff. So say whose better all you want, I didn't care about beckers and ulis before Loomis cracked my skull open. If you can't hear the magic, go on your way and come back to it later on, cause its there.

Paige, why don't I know you..you've been here 4 years.

Your words are wise as the winter snow upon the gables of the tallest town catherdral..and like its gargoyle perched above the gothic tracery stained glass window ..which depicts Jesus the Christ feeding buttered popcorn to the goat of mendez..you spew forth logical venom..a logic bukkake if you will..all over the town's people ..glazing them like donuts.

I think I'll be opt out from being big bad Bill and continue this lovely discussion as Sweet William..for I have pukethed thrice tonight..and feeling much better.

          • The only reason I like guys like Loomis less than a Jason Becker or Yngwie is because I prefer melody-oriented material to groove-oriented material when it comes to metal. Bill you're a bassist so it makes sense that you would be more into it than most of us here.

            • Bill you don't know me because I only feel the need to speak when I have a valid point. Don't get me wrong, I have a bunch of nevermore, I just don't care for the vocals. That is why I said I have been waiting for a Loomis solo c.d. Great guitar, even better rhythm's, but I have to be in the mood, like I said. Some body that love's ALL music like I do will understand, right?

B.S. the bottom line is really there is no better then other, it is how the listener percieves, technique, tone, and even there preferred taste of music. Honestly does Loomis tear up a guitar, FUCK YES, does Satch FUCK YES, along with a million players out there. It is how the individual hears it, not worth comparing genre's, players, or even dick size over. Appreciate that guitar playing is good again and look for the future.
You're 100% right, and I actually feel stupid for getting so defensive over someone's playing I like a lot, and in my determination to prove my point and their arrogance, I just showed myself as ignorant.

Since you're wondering what stuff I like, let me show you a few guys that combine great technique with emotion and melody. Maybe you'll learn something!

Tony Macalpine band: taken from the DVD "Live From Musicians Intitute", 1996. Kevin Chown: Bass, Mike Terrana: Drums

Notice how Tony builds a melody (a technical one even!), then lets loose. Even then, he keeps it pretty tasteful.

Probably my favorite tune from Macalpine. Again, you notice the repeating motif... wow... a song!

Rock Bottom, MSG wonderful !! The rest of the band you can trawl the google car and find..Gary Bardon, Glen Hughes, Cozy Powell etc etc

Something old school, but Micheal is great. You have to sit through the song a bit (solo starts at 3:30), but there is an extended solo section that is fantastic. You can learn tons about guitar by listening to Schenker's playing in UFO as well as his solo work. Clean technique, perfect bends, vibrato, dyanmics (notice how he works the volume knob of the guitar) and melody... what more could you ask for? Keep in mind, he's not using any outboard gear (stomps, racks, or multi channel amps)... just a cranked plexi and a wah. I figure you won't dig this, but do yourself a favor and check out Schenker solo and his work with UFO.

Early Malmsteen (he's in Alcatrazz here), before he got too carried away with the noodling (he seems to overplay a bit to me these days). In the early 80's, he still wore his Blackmore/Uli Roth influences on his sleeve, and was a better player in alot of ways IMO.

Uli Roth playing Sky Overture live at some festival in Europe... Actually, this video is on his site, but It doesn't seem like a whole lot of people have see...

Great performance by one of the masters. Now you know where Yngwie got his style from!
I've seen all those video's a million times each, and I'm sorry, but Yngwie is nowhere near as melodic as Becker, and Tony's playing I don't like as much as Becker's.. Uli is the man though, I will be seeing him live soon.. Also, I wasn't wondering what music you liked, but I'm glad you shared.

Btw: Bill, I'm 17, and there are tons of people here on the board that dominate me at guitar, I have much, much much much much much much, to learn. You are the true Metal Master bud. Everyone bow down.

Ahhh I understand the bass/groove connection. But you do not know Jeff's entire body of work..just some songs here and there. This is obvious. I want you to do something for me. Since I know EVERYTHING Jeff has ever done..Give me an example of a song you LOVE by your favorite player..Then I will post a song, But I want you to listen to the song at least once a day or every other day. It'll have hooks so it won't take long to grab you..

Do you want radio friendly, heavy as fuck, psychodelic, metal with solos to rip your head of..anything at all.

Let me introduce you to Jeff and Nevermore. Give it a shot.

Yngwie..I love that fuck..but not very diverse is he. He's kinda like neo-classical AC/DC..and a style he did not invent at all. As I proved in the Yngwie thread.

                  • one player with neo-classical shredding backround I really like is Bruce Bouillet... not in Racer X... but in The Scream... now that was some great nasty rock'n'roll made with giant balls and swagger...and tons of groove ... I like him a lot more than Paul Gilbert... whose clone Bruce was at first.

yeah dude, that tune is the textbook example how keyboards should be used in rock... no cheesy sounding synths but a fucking Clavinet grooving along with the rhythm section.... just like Stevie Wonder did.

I have all of the Nevermore discs and have tried listening to DHIADW and TGE in particular dozens of times. I had Zero Phase Order as the sole CD in my car for about a month. I'm just not into heavy stuff. My favorite songs are The Heart Collector and River Dragon Has Come (mainly just from the second half of the solo to the end). I also like most of Zero Phase more than anything by Nevermore, but I still don't like the rhythm playing.

What I would like to hear more of as far as instrumental guitar that, as far as I know, nobody has done much with is more in the vein of Cacophony's track Speed Metal Symphony. They actually used some counterpoint and it RULES. Nobody else does that - there's a lead and maybe it's harmonized and there's a rhythm.

My top few "neo-classical shred" songs in no particular order:
                                Speed Metal Symphony
                                Altitudes
