Steve..be nice..JS be nice!!! You both have something to offer. Steve, I like the tones you got on that recording, and the riffs you sent me a while ago that you wern't sure about. JS, you're a good player for you're age..but its all about the song. Like I said, If you have equal creative skills you can be dangerous. If not, you need direction. I'd prolly like to give a guest spot on one of my originals..and trade off. You seem to fit the bill. (pun)

I'm SICK of non-metal, clueless, know-it-all, fux that know diddly squat!!! You won't see me trying to be some authority on pop, rap, country, rocket science and brain surgery. That'll make me look like and asshole! ..EXACTLY!

I hope that wasn't aimed at me, since I never said any of the guitar players mentioned in this thread were better than another one... I'm just a BIT wiser than that.

Besides, just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean that they are clueless... Who makes you an authority on what is good music and what is bad music? As with any art, music is open to interpretation... not everyone is going to get the same enjoyment out of a given piece of work. My point is that Loomis, for all his gifts, comes off a bit "wanky" on the CD and I got bored with it. I'm not going to say he sucks, because I think he is very, very good.

Anyway, I'm glad to see you are paying attention to this thread and keeping all us JCF minions in line...

Oh yeah, for the record, I'm not really a Satriani fanboy. I think he's great and deserves more respect when come to the instrumental guitar genre though.

meh, Petrucci? I'll be playing like that by the end of the year.

Since you're wondering what stuff I like, let me show you a few guys that combine great technique with emotion and melody. Maybe you'll learn something!

Notice how Tony builds a melody (a technical one even!), then lets loose. Even then, he keeps it pretty tasteful.

Probably my favorite tune from Macalpine. Again, you notice the repeating motif... wow... a song!
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Something old school, but Micheal is great. You have to sit through the song a bit (solo starts at 3:30), but there is an extended solo section that is fantastic. You can learn tons about guitar by listening to Schenker's playing in UFO as well as his solo work. Clean technique, perfect bends, vibrato, dyanmics (notice how he works the volume knob of the guitar) and melody... what more could you ask for? Keep in mind, he's not using any outboard gear (stomps, racks, or multi channel amps)... just a cranked plexi and a wah. I figure you won't dig this, but do yourself a favor and check out Schenker solo and his work with UFO.

Early Malmsteen (he's in Alcatrazz here), before he got too carried away with the noodling (he seems to overplay a bit to me these days). In the early 80's, he still wore his Blackmore/Uli Roth influences on his sleeve, and was a better player in alot of ways IMO.

Great performance by one of the masters. Now you know where Yngwie got his style from!

it would? I'll have to defer to your greater life experience. I didn't realise that a singular comment about a Jason Becker instrumental could so clearly define an individual.

I'm sorry, but if you can seriously listen to the song I posted, especially the ending, and still say it's a wankfest. Your ass is stuck in the 80's and should really reconsider those spandex and the picture of Bon Jovi hanging over your bed.
I wouldn't call it a wankfest. It seems like most other guitar instrumentals. Basic theme stated & repeated to build a motif; a simple backing vamp to allow soloist artistic freedom to truly express themselves & expose their souls; soloing builds in speed, intensity, etc; at some point harmony guitars appear to indicate that it truly is a composed piece and not just random improv; theme repeated to tie beginning and end together to make cohesive musical vision; average listener nods off. Not wanky at all.

Are you really going to compare Jason Becker (80's) to CC Deville (80's) ?

Jason's story is tragic and he was a talented young guitarist, but it doesn't change the fact that the "song" you posted was nothing more than 5 minute (4:45 seconds to be exact) wankfest. I'm glad you're impressed by it though... that young fella had some great technique.
