But am I the only one that doesn't think Steve Vai is good? Well, let me rephrase, he is good, there is no denying his abilities to play.

His tone is god awful, he has some good licks, but I just don't like his playing. =/

Oh, and Loomis on G3...I...would shit myself.
you are listnening too much Becker and Loomis and other junior league crap... that's why you don't get it

Vai has always been a Guitar God to me along with Satch & Rhodes. I respect his abilities but have not always been impressed with his seemingly sellout of flaunting the Ibanez name at any given chance. The JEMs are great, but damn! Who has that kind of money for that caliber of guitar? Get REAL!

I'm sorry I don't like shitty tone raped with Wah.

I like Vai's chord voicing, but as far as his lead playing goes, it just fails to impress me.

        Jason can wank too

I'm Vai fan since Alcatraz days.
I researched and learned his work started back with Zappa and found that impressive and intriguing. I think his weird stuff that most don't get and at times myself included,
goes back to his stomping ground days of Zappa.
His time with Roth and Whitesnake was not only good money but more importantly exposure to develop a larger fan base to sustain his personal solo projects.
His solo work, Flexible and Passion and Warfare are my two favorites and have his so called greatest hit CD. I really liked his big open massive tone off the Garden CD, but like I said earlier there were tunes on there his singing included that I didn't get, alittle weird but truly innovative writing.

Like Zappa in that sense, He is truly a musician and performer and so far ahead of anything out there, like Zappa, most people don't get it.

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

I am odd because I love the stuff Vai did with Whitesnake and Roth but get bored quickly with his solo stuff. When he does his solo stuff he is just another contestant in the "Look what I can do" contest.

+1 I could not have said it better. I love Vai's playing when it is in the context of a "song" like the DLR album, but his solo stuff is mostly boring after the first minute or two.

Vai is further advanced on the instrument than most players can comprehend. He has the ability to hand-write a full musical score - in ANY key sitting on the toilet. He's forgotten more theory than most of us have ever learned.

I attended a Master Class with Satch last year and we had a chance to chat- he told me Steve was THE most advanced player he had ever met..... and that was when Steve was only 19 years old.

That's great, but what's the point of being able to write all that fancy shit, if the fancy shit doesn't sound good?

It sounds good to me. Sure, some of the really weird stuff gets skipped more often than not. Stuff like The Riddle, Freak Show Excess, Blue Powder, Erotic Nightmares, Juice, Whispering a Prayer... that stuff is like aural sex.

yep, a lot of his tunes actually are "describing" sex (musically)... I understand why many don't like this stuff... they probably love those arpeggio wankers so much who musically "describe" masturbation of a 15 year old teenager
some are into fucking... some are into jerking off... I'll take the first one

Vai is a monster. Technically he's amazingly proficient, and I do enjoy alot of his solo stuff, but his stuff w/ DLR & Whitesnake I enjoy simply for how good it sounds, rather than how technically proficient it is (and it is that as well). Song like "Now You're Gone" is just a guilty-pleasure ballad, but his lead break, while not particularly complex, just gets me every time.

If you see the "Live at the Astoria in London" You will witness the ultimate showman imo. He is easily the most gifted master of the
fretboard ever. Im not saying his tunes are wonderful...but live
no one can touch him! (yes ive seen Malmsteen in his prime... 1/2 of
                            Vai on stage!
