Could be, but he used to build his own guitars back in the mid '80's. One of my old guitar teachers knew him, and when he came to town he popped in the store the night I had my lessons. He was letting my teacher play one of his home built strats, but I don't recall a pointy headstock, I was a bit startstruck. I do remember it was a reddish pink with a black pickguard and a maple fretboard. He was really nice, and fuck he can shred!

I've been a fan of his since I saw him in Max Webster at a club gig in Texas on their Universal Juveniles tour. They were on tour opening for Rush at the time. Like you said he can shred, but he plays for the song most of the time. I like his latest CD a lot. He has not lost anything over the years.
