  • I bring to you ZENO ROTH!!!

As you know I've been obssessed finding the best players in the world. Like many, this started in 1978 when I discovered Eddie Van Halen and Frank Marino intially. It just snowballed from there and kept on rollin'. I insist the three most influential players in rock/metal guitar is Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen, and subjectively the metal god Jeff Loomis. Of cours there's other players involved such as Page, Randy, Oliva, Lynch ect.. but these three made the biggest impact and paved the way for the majority IMO. I always admired guys like Mike Varney who shares this enthusiam. Often rolling our eyes at what is popular, trying to ignore it.. while constantly finding amazing talent that goes unnoticed. Myself along with guys like Varney are inpired/influenced by these relatively unknowns. Which indeed assist with creativity and originality. We all know what happends when we are influenced by what is popular...yes, the cookie cutter trend machine ensues. Maybe its my chronic OCD that drives me to keep searchin..trancending the mundane. In this quest I discovered countless amazing players. I once made a list of over 100 favorites...half of them people knew. Now here's where some of you may get pissed, but does that ever stop me from speaking..

I can't belive how so many constantly chase your tails praising the same players over and over again. Some pretty mediocre players from my perpsective. Its like reading a Rolling Stone or Guitar World poll..its the same fucking players. arggggh..C'mon, I'm not saying these players suck but Ritchie Sambora, Slash, Mark Tremonti, Kirk Hammet, CC Deville..yada yada.

When I first heard the solo in '83 to "Hot on your heels" my jaw dropped to the floor..Then to Alcatraz, and the first couple Rising Force albums were phenomenal..after that Yngwie lost me. Meanwhile players like Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Andre Corbin, Tony Fredinelli, Jason Becker, Marty Freidman, Joey Taffola, Steve Vai, Satch and ect was in constant rotation. I've kept up with Yngwie and I have everything he ever put to disc. But there is NO emotional connection whenever listening to him live or at home. Yes, he's amazing, technically awesome, he's fast...very fast..likes to play ALOT, and it quickly bores me. But he would NOT exist if it wern't for players such as Uli Jon Roth and especially from his camp SILVER MOUNTAIN with the Johansson brothers and early neo-classical phenom Jonas Hansson...who was neo-classical and spinning his guitar around, then smashing it since 1980...when Yngwie was about 14 years old. Another fact is the painting on the cover of Uli Roth's first 1978 solo "Earthquake" record is titled on the back cover is "Rising Force"..Yngwie was about 12 years old. Not taking anything from Yngwie just wanted to shine light how and where he came from...man, did this take a turn.

Well, I wanted to elaborate on that whole fucking thing because I think I was the first and not the last to create a Uli Jon Roth thread on the JCF. He was nearly non exist..much like his young brother Zeno who is yet to be mentioned..Well, I know I did mention him a few times, without much response, if any at all. So I decided to dedicate this thread to Uli's younger Bro Zeno Roth..who is the closest thing to Uli. Zeno is a bit more firey and "shred" oriented including tapping than his older bro. Now, much like Uli, .. Zeno created music for himself and a select to enjoy..winning popularity contests was/is far from their minds...and exactly why they make music that goes completely under the radar...until now!

I bought Zeno's first s/t in 1986. Like Uli the music wasn't "metal" enough but I couldn't belive the playing on it. So I kept up with his stuff. Last year I picked up his latest "Runway to the gods" and I can't fucking belive the playing. Like his bro his >>FEEL<<, pitch and emotion, fire, dynamics in his playing is untouchable IMO!

    Zeno's work includes

    Zeno s/t (1986)
    Zenology (1995)
    Listen to the light (1998)
    Zenology 2 (2005)
    Runway to the gods (2006)

I recommend picking up his latest and go bawards if you like it. This is a no brainer for fans of Uli Roth, Fair Warning, Silver Mountain, James Byrd, Vandenberg..I assume our member Ulidavid (sky repilca) is quite aware of Zeno...who just plays a strat much like mine which is a '95 USA Floyd Rose Classic.which is very cool!

Ok then...lets hear some Zeno. Listen closly to this fucker..wow!

    Start with these..

    1986..vintage w/tapping .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPDko...eature=related

Uli and Zeno's music has a very spiritual vibe..almost christian like. They're playing is MUCH to amazing to be ignored..

JOHN G..I hope you enjoyed this thread..even if you knew all about Zeno.

Never heard of him but very cool. I really like this style. Although, I'm a little surprised. I always thought your taste was on the heavier side. This guy is very poppy. He reminds me of Kee Marcello who is another badass player who never got credit.

I play heavier music as a guitarist but I've always embraced great musicianship..or my idea of it. I listen to ALOT of AOR and softer rock with amazing players such as Fair Warning, Last Tribe, Starbreaker, Vandenberg, Millenium, Europe, Whitesnake and ect. Many of them crossover from one extreme to the other..like Ralph Santolla. His main band was/is the Journey-ish Millenium that once included Jorn Lande. He went on to Iced Earth and now he's in Deicide. Even Symphony X shredder Mike Romeo was in Phantoms Opera..which very light and melodic stuff.

Kee Marcello, a great player, as well as John Norum..There MUST be something in the water in Sweden. So much talent there!!!

As a bassist I don't like playing metal/rock at all..I'm a funk/fusion player. I put in alot of years doing that.

As much as Helge Engelke attempts to sound like Uli, he not as close as Zeno other than his Uli inspired custom guitar with 36 frets..he's a great player!!

I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm of the top shelf skill like this. Its too much to keep to myself. I truly believe many of you would love it too. The phrasing and emotion really pulls me in..I'm hooked on this stuff!

Thanks a bajillion Bill! That's a trip, as I had Zeno's first self-titled record (yes, record) back in the day, but was so jazzed by Uli that I never gave him a second chance...I'm on it tonight!

Wow...and imagine if they toured together!
