  • Marty vs. Dave on Rust in Peace

Does anyone have a list of who played which solos on Rust in Peace?

I was listening to a Metallica concert from 82 or so when Dave was in the band and he was playing some licks and his phrasing seemed very familiar - then I listened to Rust in Peace, and I was like - whoa, that's Dave. So I've been trying to figure out who played what on RIP.

it's pretty obvious, Marty and Dave are VERY different sounding players

They did, not sure about how correct, but there definitely is a list of these. Namely, the Hangar solos don't look right to me.Then again, I don't think they'd screw up the booklet up that bad.

I'm sure the listing of the booklet is correct, it's just that sometimes it's hard to tell what is listed as a solo...

doesnt really matter to me, megadeth is just awesome
though, i have to agree, tornado of souls is like the best solo i've ever heard, and it make marty an awesome-er guitarist than dave

Nothing compares to Dave-Marty duo imho. You have the melody-technique of Marty, the great riffs and agressive solos of Mustaine. Hope the new Dave-Chris duo will at least be ok. Glen Drover might be a talented dude but surely he did not fit to Megadeth.

Marty was the only soloist most can look back at and say, "thats a marty solo". His style was so different from Dave compared to the others, people have to copy his style and embellishments or people would think it sounds wrong.

Marty is in my top 3 favorite players, and as much as I'd love to agree.. You're forgetting poland, his solo's were fucking nuts.

I always thought Dave Mustaine was sort of a hack at lead playing, but I absolutely adore his rhythm playing.. His lead is too sloppy pentatonic based for my personal preference.. Not saying he doesn't have some good solo's..

                      Wat?

Mustaine doesn't open with a solo on holy wars or five magicks.

Marty plays the only lead in poison was the cure.

marty's solo's are very melodic and his sound is smooth. dave is more aggressive and his solo's are more atonal, if that helps you listen for them.

I agree you can hear the difference pretty easily on Rust In Peace. But I listened again to Cryptic Writings and Youthanasia and the solos on those two are boring and mediocre. I couldn't tell who played what for the most part - no wonder Marty left, when he was being so underused.

3:28 in Holy Wars is definitely Dave.

Five Magics, I think they're referring to the breaks in the first verse.

Maybe the Poison lead they're referring to is the part from 2:06 until the actual solo?
