  • A Bogner Fish was NOT used on Rust In Piece!

Lets bust this myth right now, I can't begin to tell you how many times I've heard someone say that.

The Fish came out a year after RiP debuted.

I have heard a few times that Rust In Peace was recorded with the Bogner Triple Giant preamp. Which apparently was the predecessor to the Bogner Fish preamp. That might be why it is assumed that it was a Fish on the record. They're supposedly very similar preamps. The Fish was just Reinhold Bogners new design since he sold the Triple Giant design to another company.

Apparently there are very few Bogner Triple Giant preamps out there.

according to Marty they used just Marshalls and nothing else... not pedals.. effects etc. just Marshalls.

From what is documented, and since Bogner has it documented that he has sold some to Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, it seems that the Fish was used during the Countdown to Extinction/Youthanasia era for the some of the lead and clean tones.

An old tech for Mustaine said that they were using Wagnar and Tubeworks preamps. But it has been stated that the Triple Giant was the amp that was used on it as well.

The shark channel on the triple giant is very similar to the fish.

But it definitely wasn't a fish!

Just wanted to clear that up for the Megadeth fans!

I think So Far So Good was the last album that Mustaine used a Marshall head on.

The Rust In Peace tone definitely doesn't sound very Marshall.

It's a very razor sharp mid focused distortion with barely any bass. All the thud you hear is most likely the depth control of the 2150.

It has a little bit of a solid state feel although which is why it's very likely that they may have been double tracking with two different amps and one of them was the Tubeworks SS.

          This is all speculation though.

Actually, that was the Hafler Triple Giant preamp designed by Bogner. Not a bad preamp, but I'm sure it's no Bogner Fish. I sold my Triple Giant after I bought an original Kasha Rockmod II, sounded better to me.

hahahaha, that is why i HATE the marty-era megadeth...everything sounded so thin to my ears...others really dig it, so maybe there is something i am missing out on.

i have heard the bogner fish is awesome though. i used to have a soldano x88r - how does the fish compare to that?
              GEAR:

AFAIK Mustaine has always used a Marshall poweramp, except on UA where he used the Line 6 gear.

I always thought the preamp on RIP was the Rocktron Prophecy, and that he used that up through TSHF.

                    Here's a pic of Mustaine's rig from 1993.

From what I can see from bottom to top...

                    VHT 2150 Poweramp
                    BBE Sonic Maximizer
                    Yamaha SPX-900 Multi-FX
                    Custom Audio Electronics 3+ Preamp
                    Tubeworks Real Tube II Preamp

After that I am unsure. You can see the Bradshaw Switching System, another Yamaha SPX 900, a wireless unit, a Whirlwind Selector system, and a Furman Power Conditioner.

No Marshall . I think he went back to a Marshall setup for Cryptic Writings.

Yep, that's the Countdown to Extinction/Youthanasia setup.

Although that Tubeworks may have been a part of Rust in Peace.

He didn't use Marshall for Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction, and Youthanasia.

Afterwards he started using the Marshall EL34 100/100 rack power amp with a prophecy.

Well for one, you have probably one of the greatest preamps ever made and is one of the coveted 3.

                          CAE 3+
                          Bogner Fish
                          Soldano X88/X99

I definitely don't think that the tone on Rust in Peace is one of those tones that were meant to be pleasing to the ear for cork sniffers.

I think that tone was shaped by mustaine and his techs to kick our asses and that's what it did.

I mean can you honestly imagine a different tone for any of the songs on Rust In Peace?

Can you imagine what holy wars would sound like if those palm mutes were actually fat, chunky, and loud? The song would be a bunch of noise.

Imagine that fast palm muted chromatic part before the main riff of take no prisoners with another preamp.

                          It wouldn't work IMO.

RIP tone is a legendary metal tone, but it's definitely not for cork sniffers.

Ummm it would sound good..kinda like Nevermore?

Bogner should make an Uberschall preamp!!
