  • John 5....

I gotta say I always wrote this guy off as 'eh' playing with Manson. Wasn't my bag. But then a co-worker sent me this youtube clip:

The backing track has that 'industrial' vibe to it, but his playing is like a methed-out-twang. The two (I think) clash, but his playing is pretty good.

John Lowery played/co-wrote the songs on DLR 10 years ago. That dude is a serious player!!!

I did think his playing on that clip was kinda stiff. Good, but "stiff".

Being both a metal/country guitar fan, I really like John 5's playing a lot.

He kicked ass on the Ozzy/Rob Zombie tour. Zakk Wylde took the award for rock guitar poses and fist to the chest pumps and stuff, but John 5 totally outplayed him.

His Requiem solo cd is pretty cool.

He's one of the best in the industry. Before Manson, he had done some TV and movie soundtracks, toured, done session, work recorded with kd lang, Rob Halford's band Two, DLR. After Manson, I know he was with Rob Zombie and has done some solo stuff. He's an incredible player!

Yeah, he's an awesome guitar player - check out the 'DLR Band' CD to hear him in a more regular rock format....

He is very solid and has a ton ot tricks and technique. I have always liked his playing. I think I owned one of his brothers PRS guitars back a few years ago.

He's got great tricks to borrow and learn from, but grooving does not come so naturally to Mr. 5, especially here where he looks like he's either bored or having trouble hearing the backing track.

                      Why?
Why would anyone want to play that on a chicken picker?
                      Doesn't fit for me.
I liked his playing, but on a tele shaped guitar? Why?

Requiem is pretty kickass and worth a listen.

hahahahahaha, my tele is one of the most vicious sounding guitars i own...it is THE recording guitar for my band. i would play it live except it hums too much and i don't want to "ruin" the KILLER sound by putting in hum-cancelling pickups....in all honesty, the jackson's, etc have a more refined sound - they require the amp to sound brutal. the tele - the brutality comes from the GUITAR!!! the amp only "amplifies" the guitars rude sound.

                          does that make sense?
                          GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

                          and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

                            No. Or maybe yes.

It might sound great. But it looks like a Tele! Imagine Deicide, or Megadeth using a telecaster. For metal, it just doesn't work.
I know Scott Ian has used one, but who cares about Anthrax since they shat all over John Bush?
