I guess we all have to do it sometimes, having to say goodbye to somebody, a family member or a good friend, it hurts, it's a sad thing. And it's also a good topic to write songs about. So let's post songs about saying goodbye.
Sevendust "Angel's son"
This song was dedicated to Snot frontman Lynn Strait, who was a very much loved character in the late nineties' metal scene. Strait died in 1998 in a car accident. This song actually came in two versions, both differing from each other in the overal sound and musicvideo. The first one, has Strait's family and his best friends around a campfire and they used blurred footage of Strait to make it appear that his ghost was also there.
THIS is the second one, this one is played in a different key and the Video shows an ER scene where the staff is trying to revive a person. None the less, I prefer this version over the former because the difference in overall vibe of the song really makes me shed tears, so hauntingly beautiful and sad.
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Tear Jerker"
This song was dedicated to Kurt Cobain who was a personal friend to Anthony Kiedis, he describes meeting Cobain backstage where he came on wearing a Dress he then describes Cobain's facial features and how lonely he must have been lying on the floor waiting to be found. It really adds the to the mournful feeling here. Also kudos for Dave Navarro who played such beautiful lines on this one.
Slaughter "Fly to the angels"
This song was dedicated to Kiss drummer Eric Carr and after it came out guitarist Tim Kelly died from a car accident so it was dedicated in his honor too. Kelly features in this video and is heard playing and singing on the recording, he had no possible way of knowing that he would be singing and playing guitar on the song with which the band would say goodbye to him. He probably never saw it different from it being a salute to their buddy Eric from Kiss.
Eels "Going to your funeral part 2"
As beautiful and sad as this piece of music is, I still find it a shame that I couldn't find the first part in which E describes attending a funeral and the absurdity that surrounds a funeral.
Going to your funeral now and feeling
I could scream
Everything goes away
Driving down the highway throught the
perfect sunny dream
A prefect day for perfect pain
Look at all the people with
the flowers in their hands
They put the flowers on the box
that's holding all the sand that was...
That was once...
That was once you
Honolulu Hurricane I knew
that you were not insane
Living in the insane world
Smiling like it's no big deal
Scabby wounds that never heal
The woman was only a girl
Look at all the people with
their heads down in their hands
makes it hard to understand
that, uh
What I need to miss...
It's what I need to miss...
is you
Going to your funeral and
I'm feeling like a fool
No one's gonna take the blame
Thinking 'bout the days of
hanging out behind the school
Everthing goes away
