Old school Robbin Crosby/Metropolis video...

I found a buddy of mine on Facebook that grew up in La Jolla when the pumphouse at Windansea was really happening (late 70's/early 80's), and he had a video of a party down there that someone made into an indie-like film...

Anyway, someone else is doing the music on the soundtrack, but fast-forward to about 3:05 or so, there's Robbin Crosby and his band at the time (Metropolis - 1977) jammin' at the pumphouse (Robbin's playing the firebird in the tophat)...he pops back up at the end too for a bit, shame that there's none of his music or playing on it!

that was a blast! My mum & her brothers were surfers and we spent a lot of time hanging at the beach in the 70s. Good times!

Great little peek back at what life was like then! I had almost forgotten about Chris O'Rourke, the guy surfing with the helmet on right before the part w/ Robbin. Very sad story. At that point, he had cancer all through his body, and wore the helmet because he had just had a tumor removed. He wasn't supposed to even be able to walk at that point, and just kept doing his thing to the end.

Indeed, it's crazy to see what it was like and the characters involved back then...lots of locals (to this day, Windansea is a pretty tough wave to break into), didn't know the whole story on Chris (I had moved down here in '85, and the crazyness had since subsided - that happens when beach houses start fetching a million and then some, I guess!), thanks for the insight into Chris' helmet, I didn't know the whole story!

There's some Joe Roper video too, which is funny 'caus he's now the ONLY dude to take your board to for dings down the street from me, makes pretty decent coin from what it looks like...also like all the Mac Meda Destruction Co. signage (the local surfing/boozing crew)...still see the stickers on the old-timers cars around town, last founder died not too long ago, was still tending bar at the West End on Sundays until the bitter end...

Windansea is an amazing surf spot, I have had many different experiences there over the years. from ripping the best quality head high rights, to being caught inside when the sand was eroded out by a storm and almost getting smashed by huge shorebreak on the 8' rock cliffs there that show when the sand is washed out.
