In the UK there aren't any real indie/underground radio stations. I prefer listening to Radio 4 than the same 10 songs played day in and day out on Radio 1 or 2, it drives me mental. (Mind you, so does "Woman's Hour" on Radio 4. Not once have I heard them discuss jam-making, darning socks or how to make their tits get bigger.)

anyway... you guys have plenty of radio channels which have many programs which aren't dictated by record labels or Chavs' requests.

The most popular radio over here is also the one which plays the biggest amount of underground music and has most sub-culture oriented shows. Yeah during mid-day they play the usual crap too but during the evenings or weekends they play anything from ug death metal to experimental jazz.

UK is one of the most productive countries ever music wise... there's tons of music made everyday. Only 0,5% of all that gets into radio. And that counts for all kinds of independent and ug radios too.
It's just most people make an unlistenable music. No one gives a crap about them because they just suck so bad.

bascially I can't be bothered to write it all again, but the gist of it was I don't agree with you.

The UK is a place where alot of different music comes out.

It does get some radio play because of the BBC charter to play different stuff.

But in reality 95% of music on radio is garbage because record labels pay to have their crap played.. hence all people are stupid and will buy what they are told and the popularity of music is nothing to do with it's quality.

It doesn't matter. The point he's trying to make is that you can be popular without being good. In my opinion, music that is popular among the masses, is usually unimaginative and lacking any real substance. The idiotic masses prefer catchy melodies like commercial jingles that they can hum along to in their empty little heads. Circus music if you will, for the performing monkeys.

However, being popular doesn't automatically mean you suck. It just doesn't prove you're good.

I mostly agree but when arguments like this start I always gotta feeling that some folks think that tr00 UG > bands which have a bigger audience than just their friends

Nothing wrong with catchy melodies... really good catchy melodies are hard to do... good metal has catchy melodies too.
It's how you present them... if you play them with heavy guitars or with a polka band.

But generally I say that a band which is more popular is better than the one which isn't popular.
Meaning... when a decent amount of people listen to you... that means you are somewhat listenable.
There's much more horrible hobby-amateur bands who will never sound decent.
