Metallica, but only by a hair. Mostly because I think james has a much better voice then dave. If it were a battle of the more talented soloists then dave > kirk but overall i still have to hand it to metallica. but just barely
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil

I prefer Metallica with Cliff Burton to Megadeth with Marty Friedman by a slight edge. Both bands without those musicians are a shadow of what they are with them.

As a band, they are solid players on each instrument.Lars is blasting those drums, James & Kurt are trading stuff back and forth ...

Megadeth, while making some great guitar rock songs, have had a revolving cast and FOR ME, it's hard to be loyal to a band if you're not sure who is in it right now.
That's funny you're loyal to a band when YOU are not sure who is in it. There's never been a guy named Kurt in Metallica.

Gonna have to go with Megadeth. Yes, I do like Metallica, but not near as much as Megadeth.

Several years ago I would have said Metallica. In the past few years Megadeth has been more consistent and put out more good stuff, for me anyway.

I have to go with Megadeth. The first 4 Metallica albums are awesome, but anything after AJFA I'm not much into. Megadeth has been more consistant with great songs and although RIP is my favorite, I can listen to any Mega cd and like it.
I'm not afraid to bleed, but I won't do it for you.

RIP was ok, but AJFA was better-written.

To me Megadeth and Metallica are the Judas Priest and Iron Maiden of Thrash - you cannot have one without the other, both have fans that are loyal to only one or the other, and both appeal to both groups of fans.

Musically, as well, both have their own thing going on. Metallica did the technically proficient thing for a while, then settled into a more "radio-friendly" solo and song structure format, and Megadeth stayed with the technicality. At the very least, they tried to go for a more "radio-friendly" sound but went back to their roots and accepted life without constant radio play.

However, if we look at both bands from their debut to "the point they stopped rocking and started sucking", most agree that Black was Metallica's sucking point, and Risk was Megadeth's sucking point (Breadline, anyone?)

So that gives at least 4 albums for each band, covering their "innocent youth" to their "grownup" stages.

                              Metallica:
                              Kill 'em All
                              Ride The Lightning
                              Master Of Puppets
                              And Justice For All

                              Megadeth:
                              Killing Is My Business...
                              Peace Sells...
So Far, So Good, So What
                              Rust In Peace

Now, if we look at these releases as the competition Mustaine intended them to be, we see Dave "stuck" in a Punk-influenced, angry teenager mode over 3 albums, while Metallica have gone from Punk-influenced, angry teenager mode to "aware of the larger world outside the street I live on and my own personal life".

So that puts Metallica ahead of Megadeth for growing up a little bit.

Megadeth have always seemed, to me, to be copying Metallica in terms of album content/theme.

I consider RIP to be Megadeth's version of MOP - particularly in regards to Disposable Heroes vs Take No Prisoners - "you will die, when i say, you must die - back to the front" vs "love and war say all is fair, take his life but won't take his hair, your body parts your country spares, by the way son here's your wheelchair".

I don't compare One to Take No Prisoners, though the subject matter is closer, because the music for One is more structured to build on the theme first presented by Disposable Heroes, whereas Take No Prisoners doesn't have a pre-existing "theme" to serve as its base other than Peace Sells.

So, in the end, Metallica expanded beyond the overcrowded Metal genre to compete with bands who were copping Hetfield's vocal style, which is the most-identifiable trait of a given band when the playing field gets as crowded as it is. Most folks considered this wimping out on Metal, but Metal doesn't live long anyway. You can choose to die with it or change course. Megadeth will die with Metal, and Metallica will circle back around to it when too many bands cop their old sound and it becomes popular again.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

If you're going in albums up until risk, you're forgetting Countdown, Youthanasia and Cryptic Writtings..

I remember watching that Lars said he was a huge fan of Rust in Peace, and Dave was apart of Metallica, so obviously they were similar, and if one piece of another band leaves, there's always going to be that similar sound.
