    • I have to say, I suspected Megadeth was more popular here, but I'm surprised to see that almost twice the number of people prefer them over Metallica. I've been meaning to post something similar over on the ESP board to see if Metallica cleans up over there, but I haven't gotten around to it. Can't even remember if I'm a member over there or not.

      • Ehhh, used to seriously love Metallica, last "good thing was Justice for All. And that was having shortcomings. Lead guitar was ALWAYS mediocre, james made up for it with decent riffage. Black album took years to actually like, although the the tone was heavy. Now, they just suck balls and need to die.

Megadeth, I could never "quite' get "really' into. BUT they have stayed true to course, however much of the material was mediocre at best. Lead guitar was always high quality. Hence their popularity here and among musicians.

Both bands are great fun live and are still worth seeing. Even if Lars is falling apart (and Bill's son should be playing for them). Although Metallica is WAYYYY overpriced to see, so maybe that's not quite correct.

I'd probably CURRENTLY choose Megadeth, but there's really so much better to see. Even Maiden puts on a better show these days.

Withthe state of both bands, this thread SHOULD be a who sucks worse thread...

        • I don't get everyone saying Megadeth has stayed the course. Everything after Rust in Peace is so far from what they started out doing. I like some of the later stuff - mostly what I've listened to on Warchest, but its vastly different from SFSGSW, KIMB, etc.

It could be our reference point. I didn't get into Megadeth UNTIL Rust In Peace, and can't really get too much into the prior material. The earlier stuff sounded too punk and garage band to my ears. So in my mind, Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction ARE what Megadeth is supposed to sound like. And mostly, they've stuck with that sound. One who was into the previous material could rightfully be expected to think that they changed on Rust and Peace and have not been the same since.

Metallica on the other hand took a sharp turn somewhere on or after the Black album. Today's material sounds nothing like the old material. And most in our community I think see that as being a bad thing, because we liked the old material.

See, to me, CtoE is a complete 180 from RIP.

              • CTE was the beginning of "spit and polish" production.

                • I would have said Metallica in the late 80's definitely. Some time around ... and Justice for all. If you ask me today though, I would say Megadeth without a doubt especially with Chris Broderick on the roster. I fell inlove with the Rhoads when Kirk was using it, and did not know a damn thing about Randy at the time. I know.. blasphemy right???

To my ear, CTE definitely had better production, but the songs themselves were cut from the same cloth as RIP.

Wow - I have a completely different opinion of CTE. To me, CTE is Metallica's Black Album, or rather, Megadeth's attempt at it.

                      • Megadeth kept up their playing chops but did make a sharp turn in terms of music style after RIP. I interviewed Ellefson a few weeks ago and he even said they made a conscious decision to do something different.

Yes, blasphemy indeed considering Rhoads smokes everyone in Metallica

                            • I've always loved Metallica. I always have and I always will. They got me into metal way back when. The only thing I ever liked about Megadeth was Marty's leads. And those will never be the same, now that he's out of the picture. So, my vote is quite clear. Don't bash me TOO hard, mmkay?
As far as I'm concerned he can stay with Dean and play his dots+fins KV copies, and whatever that aborted fetus he "designed". More like "I saw it in my puke". -Newc

hasn't metallica gone on record before about making a conscious decision to do something different also? bith bands did. metallica just chose a more commercial direction. megadeth went different but still stayed JUST below the mainstream radar....
