    Hmmm,

Not sure I am with you there. Most of those bands seem to fall flat for me, I have heard it all before and nothing seems new and original.

Arch Enemy I'll grant are excellent, however they have been around since the Mike Amott's exit from Carcass in 95. Now you see why he picked Angela to replace the other guy they had on vocals, she is almost a spitting image of Jeff Walker (vocally speaking). So although I really like them there is nothing new there, just new generation Carcass.

CoB, In Flames etc all seem to be rehashes of At the Gates. Funny thing is that At the Gates was a rehash of Entombed.

I don't know about you guys but all these new bands I hear don't really excite me that much because I feel I have heard it all before.

But I still get the funny feeling inside when I hear Mary Jane through a loud speaker, and for that matter Disposable Heros as well. So those old Thrash bands aren't completely irrelevent.

I like CoB, but I think they suffer from what a lot of bands suffer from these days - too many CD's and too many friggin' songs.

I've noticed that when CD's fully replaced LP's, bands went from 8 songs an album to 14 or more. And I think that means that basically 7-8 of those songs, if not more, are throwaway. You look at Master of Puppets, and its got 8 solid songs on it - not a stinker in the whole thing - then you look at the Black Album, and I don't think I could name more than 4 of them - I was looking at the disc the other day and was like "The God that Failed? Have I ever even listened to that one?"

What happens when you've got all these diluted songs, is that these bands lose "the riff." I've listened to a lot of new metal lately, and the problem is the same - I don't remember anything significant about what I just listened to. There's no "riff" that hooks you and sucks you in.

Yeah.. I heard that Jeff learned a lot of his chops from that guy, I could be wrong though.

Hell yeah! They're a band that's never gone away, and I still love picking up their new releases. They should have another one coming soon, since Immortalis came out in '07.

I laughed when I gnored the first Overkill comment. I have 20 >>OVERKILL<< cds in my collection..their entire body of work from beginning to Immotalis..with guest Randy Blythe on one song. Immotalis is awesome IMO!! I seen Overkill three tries in the last several years and they always fuggin' deliver..they rule!! Some drunk girl forced me to suck her fat tit at the bar..at their last show. That was pretty weird.

Overkill needs no defense. They are a metal institution that refused and ignored all trends. They only give a fuck about being Overkill!!
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
                Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

                • Immortalis is a fantastic disc - its on my ipod/alarm clock - I woke up to Devils in the Mist this morning. Ron Lipnicki (sp?) is insane on the drums on that disc.

                  • They usually come home to NJ and play around here like every October, but I've missed them for the past several years. Blitz used to live not far from me, and I would see him once in awhile at the local movie theater or supermarket in my late teens and early 20s. Great band, nice bunch of guys.

We gotta hook up next time they play @ Starland or in the city.

                        • I voted Megadeth, purely because I like their music better. I got into playing Jacksons because I was sick of problems with BC Rich.

                          • Megadeth over Metallica for me. Classic Metallica kicks ass tho!

And Overkill rocks! I watched them go from clubs up here in Suffern NY to getting signed and playing the world. Bobby is a good dude. I have prom pics with his little sister... lol. Long story...

I dunno, grandy (turky? :ROTF ... grandturkie, I kinda like "The God That Failed" - even though I haven't heard it in years, I can still hum it all the way through and remember how the riffs & chorus goes. So, to me, TGTF is a memorable song. It is one of 2 or 3 songs that James wrote about Christian Science (cult), the organization that his parents made him attend when he was a kid.

I bet it wouldn't take long for somebody to name the other one(s).
