I agree with this one 100%. I have a tough time downpicking any of their stuff up to tempo. My band keeps a few covers in our back pocket just in case, and Through the Never is one of them. I can get through most of each verse, but I cramp up by the time I hit the G to F# change and have to alternate pick it. It drives me nuts because I always try to play covers as accurately as possible and I know it is all downstrokes. The sad thing is that is one of their easier songs

My favorite Hetfield riff is the intro to Blackend.

whatever people say, James Hetfield is a real Heavy Metal icon and a huge inspiration for lot of people... he made me want to play the guitar, and that happened 10 years ago. Someday i hope to shake his hand and thank him for the inspiration, influence and the work with Metallica that made me the guitarist i am today. That being said... i think people will dig this photo (probably you already seen it...)

i'm a HUGE Metallica fan and Hetfield fan, but in my case i dont consider him the greatest rythmn metal player... but one of the greatest! i dont believe that there is one guy better than all, no one is perfect...and he was one of the greatest metal singers before his voice got scr*wed =/ if he still had the AJFA/Black Album voice he would still kick ass (vocaly)...

I've been playing Hetfield's chops for a very long time and I'm happy to say that if it wasn't for me learning the timing and rythm of this amazing muscian, the rest of what I've learned would have been much more difficult. One of the statements I make about playing Metallica is, 'If you can actually play Metallica, you can pretty much play anything else.' Peace.

I will agree with that statement 100000%. Rhythm wise. If you play it like they do, and make it sound like they do, then you sir (anyone), have very good chops. The muting, downpicking and overally heavyness is just brutal as fuck.

Everyone starts off with Metallica and they think that it's too easy, they come back years later and say "Shit, I still can't even play that!"
