One of the statements I make about playing Metallica is, 'If you can actually play Metallica, you can pretty much play anything else.' Peace.

totally agree, Hetfield its one of those guitarists that if you wanna get real good at rythmn or "strenghten" up your rytmhn skills... you just need to learn his chops, because he goes from simple riffs to difficult ones! he's tight!

John Schaffer (iced earth) is the baddest rhythm player around. IMO.

JH is seriously underrated as a rhythm player. Its pretty hard to play and sing many of those Metallica riffs! Regarding Metallica.. they aren't one of my favorite bands.. never were.. never will be but I have always been a big fan of JH

Funny thing is, simple as they are, JH's rare solos are still way better than Kirk "king of the out of tune vibrato" Hammett's!

I second the Jon Schaffer comment, but JH did it first, and is right up there.

Left-field thought: what would a band with those two in it sound like?

I somewhat agree with you. When I heard Coming Curse, I almost gave up. Both JS and JH have right hand stamina and rhythmic ability which drives me up the wall....

I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with the band Decapitated, but they took solid and brutal ass rhythm to the next level.. .Way beyond iced earth..

                But this is about JH!

He was also a big reason why I got into guitar. But I think Mustaine blows him away in the rhythm department. There are quite a few Megadeth rhythms which challenge me, but I can't think of a single Metallica one.

Dave's "groove" is far more advanced then James Hetfields, but James Hetfield's overall tightness and down picking stamina blows Dave's out of the water.

James hetfield can sure downstroke fast and hard on the E string. But Dave invented the spiderchord and as a rhthym player, can still do minor solos while singing.

I have never tried Loomis' work, but I honestly don't think I am capable of doing much of what he does.

                                Keith Richards.

James is a badass and a huge influence on so many players. There are so many killer rhythm players from that era - Eric Peterson, Gary Holt, Scott Ian, Dave Mustaine, Kerry King - the list goes on. I'm not sure who the best is, but Hetfield is my favorite; his riffs were so inspiring to me.
