So what's everyone's take on this:

You always hear "The Big Three" thrash bands, and universally, I think we can all agree its Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. Some younger guys might not get it, but that's what it always was.

Then, you see people expand it to "The Big Four" or "The Big Five" and then start throwing in Exodus, Testament, Anthrax, Kreator, Overkill, etc.

To me, there's never really been an established "fourth place" band. Like, if you read the wiki entry for Anthrax, it says "Anthrax was one of the Big Four thrash bands" and then you read the entry for Testament, and "Testament was one of the Big Four." etc. etc.

      Opinions?

Despite all of these bands which formed around the same time the "Big four" tag is probably more in reference to the timing of when they all brought out their debut albums . But in saying that in 1985 Exodus released" Bonded by blood" which came out 2 months before Megadeths "Killing is my business" . By that stage Slayer,Metallica & Anthrax had already released their debuts. Yet exodus were probably overshadowed as Megadeth were hyped due to the Mustaine/Metallica link.

Yet you throw in other bands like Metal Church , Possesed , Armoured Saint etc who formed in the early 80's also and also released debuts in 1985 yet arent seemingly recognised as Pioneers of the thrash movement as compared to the " Big 4" .Could also come down which band was more popular and their appeal at the time also.
I dont get scared but i do get shocked!!

The Big Four was ALWAYS Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax. Testament didn't come around until later, and Exodus never achieved as much success. Sounds like revisionist history to me.

Nice tour Matt! I like the Jaxx and the Troc (Virginia and Philadelphia, respectively). The Jaxx is tiny but always has tons of energy. They get lots of European bands.

I love Jaxx! I was tripped out that I was going to see Entombed for the first time, and the venue is in a strip mall next to a Chinese Take out joint on one side and a Kabob joint on the other side.

thrash though.... debate time, do people think there was a reason why bands like agent steel etc weren't as big as guys like metallica/slayer, or do you prefer the bands like agent steel to the big four etc... if so why??

Anthrax were most definetely the other of the Big Four bands. They were massively succesful for a thrash band around the time of "State of Euphoria". They had "Antisocial" and "Who Cares Wins" being shown on daytime TV in the UK which was pretty amazing for that time. I never saw Slayer, Metallica or Megadeth on TV, but Anthrax were.
They've lost the plot now, but they were big back then.

old Agent Steele didn't sound as fresh and dangerous as the new type of american metal made by Big Four and Bay Area thrashers, instead they were more similar to late 70's British bands which started to fade away

The Big Four simply had better songs than their peers like Testament, Overkill etc.
