Metallica came up to the Bay Area about the same time Exodus hit the scene...problem was, Exodus got stuck on a crappy label (Torrid Records) that held up the release of Bonded by Blood for over a year. By the time Exodus's album hit the stores, Kill 'Em All had been out and Metallica was on the road with Raven tearing it up...
The driving force behind thrash was Ron Quintana at KUSF in San Francisco (he was also the dude that put out the Metal Mania 'zine)...Slayer and Megadeth knew it too, as they couldn't get gigs in L.A. thanks to hair metal exploding, so they'd come up to the Bay Area to get gigs (usually Ruthie's in Oakland, but sometimes the Keystone (Berkeley) or The Stone (SF))...warming up for them would usually be Possessed, Death Angel & sometimes Exodus would be on the bill as well...you'll remember Kerry King playing in Megadeth for a couple months too (would play the Slayer gig, go back, then come out with Mustaine & Co in jeans & a t-shirt!)...
Anthrax started getting traction after Metallica went to NY to record Kill 'Em All. I had heard of them, but it wasn't until the guys in Metallica came back and really started pumping them that the demand in the Bay Area got big (there was no demo that I know of prior to the Soldiers of Metal/Howling Furies 45, which I STILL have ).
As for Testament, the had a smaller following (as Legacy) and did come along a little later, and didn't really gig as hard as the other bands from what I remember...Crime doesn't pay. Neither does lutherie...

It drives me nuts when people wear band shirts without actually listening to the bands. I start talking to them about the band, they give me a blank stare and I feel like an idiot. Perfect example: A guy I know was wearing a "Somewhere in Time" t-shirt so started talking about how much I loved that album that "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" is the best concept for a song title ever. Then I got a blank stare. Yes, it's free publicity but it just bothers me when I see that. Come on, practice what you preach people and listen to the bands you wear shirts for.
Speaking of practice what you preach, I was listening to some early Testament yesterday after not listening to it for probably two years. Love that stuff. I really gotta relearn some of that rhythm guitar stuff. I remember it being so fun.Last edited by Ben...; 02-19-2010, 01:32 AM."Dear Dr. Bill,

These days I actually prefer listening to the originators, it's punk but sounds a lot more trashier than most actual thrash bands these days with their modern and watered down approach.
I particualry enjoy these British bands I grew up with.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
