Really, in the grand scheme of things, most of these bands are "underground" in that 90% of people have never heard of them, though they're common among people who like this stuff.

Does Nevermore count? "Born" is a rather thrashy song. Not underground though.
                          "Dear Dr. Bill,
I work with a woman who is about 5 feet tall and weighs close to 450 pounds and has more facial hair than ZZ Top." - Jack The Riffer

"OK, we can both have Ben..joint custody. I'll have him on the weekends. We could go out in my Cobra and give people the finger..weather permitting of course.." -Bill Z. Bub

Well i don't think Testament, Kreator and Sodom are underground if you count out that somewhere in the grand context of music every thrash metal band is underground.

What might fit in this thread is Demolition Hammer. They were so awesome yet very unknown. If you haven't already, then check out their album Epidemic of Violence. IMO this album should be mentioned together with all the thrash metal masterpieces of Slayer, Testament, Kreator and alikes. It's that great and still it's a bit beyond me how they never "made it big".

Trash Metal was basicly mainstream when Metallica,Anthrax and Slayer where the holy trinity.
Therefore its hard to classify any trash band as underground.

                              Or

are there all unknown, unpopular bands underground?
                              Also pop ones...
