To me, it goes without saying that anything Gilmour does he does with absolute class. His son wanted to learn sax instead of guitar and he becomes an acomplished sax player.

This is what did it for me....

David Crosby and Graham Nash singing Stephen Still's song "Find The Cost Of Freedom " with David Gilmour. from David Gilmour's DVD Remember That Night , live...

Here's the thing. I think the members are musically talented but the music itself just doesn't speak to me. I remember when The Wall come out and it was SOOOOOOO hyped by radio and it was being jammed down my throat against my will. I think it soured me on the band really. Sort of the same thing with Rush.

Being from Canada, our radio and telecommunication body had rules in place for Canadian content percentages on radio. THis was affectionately abbreviated to CANCON. It has a noble purpose really, to promote Canadian culture and identity. Essentially it meant that in order for broadcasters to play the latest music being 'promoted' by the major labels, they also had to get in "X" many minutes of Canadian content. It also means that I had a lot of stuff in my music rotation that was essentially forced on me by listening to radio. We got a lot of Rush, Helix, Honeymoon Suite, Platinum Blonde and stuff like that getting airplay just because it was made in Canada. I was a young headbanger. I wanted Sabbath or heavier. Rush didn't do it for me.

Anyways, I digress. No I don't dislike Pink Floyd or think they suck, their music just doesn't speak to me.

          LOL!!!
The format must have drifted down across the lake from Toronto to Rochester NY.
          Too much!
For a guy that calls himself Cygnus X1, I have to say...I HATED Rush for years.
Could not stand Geddy's voice, thought Peart overplayed, and also thought Alex was a wanker that didn't quite fit anything, much less Rush.
Something odd happened along the way.
I stopped listening to rock radio.
Then I started listening, wife got me Rush Chronicles, Rush in Rio DVD, and concert tix to see them.
I was converted-I fell right back where I was (Kings Era), and caught up. Fugg, I found out what a great band I had missed!

PF, always been there, sort of. It's a long story but suffice it to say I got turned on to DSOTM and worked my way back, then forward.
The Wall was an odd point, then all downhill from there with them.
The Wall STILL "feels" like a Roger Waters moment to me.

Pink Floyd is hands down, probably my favorite band of all time. Just amazing, beautiful songs. You can just float away on most on their music, it really is a utopia expressed through musicality!
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

                Damn that was good!
I've never been the biggest Floyd fan, but The Wall was a large part of my teenage years. I could probably still sing the entire album note-for-note.
Don't worry, I'm not going to....

Floyd live was just incredible the emotion that all of them showed is something I will always remember.
The DSM tour and the next one can't remember the name but it was great too.
Watching DG I gathered most leads were planned some were just off the wall improvised.I saw them 2 nights in a row on the DSM tour and they did mix up the play list a little.
DG is one of the best IMO the guitar just drips with emotion. He had a very processed sound most of the time but when it came to a more bluesy song he pulled out the old tele and 86'd the processors and just crank the cleans.
I feel bad for the young ones who never got to see PF live.It wasn't a concert it was an event.
It was mandatory to eat some shrooms about an hour before the show!!
                    Really? well screw Mark Twain.

THAT song is one hardcore guitarists must learn as far as I'm concerned.

                          A string benders materpiece.

Shine On You Crazy Diamonds is one KILLER track.
I live on the edge of danger facing life and death every single day.....then I leave her at home and go disarm bombs.

Im now using it for the last 2 days, to mimic the master! I have the first
solo spot on...about 1/3rd of the 2nd solo. If i just keep at it, i should
have it smooth in 2 months! I'll be like 5000 other Youtube "Numbs" !!

Always loved the solo for Comfortably Numb, but Time is the one that tears the ass out of me. Gilmour has a way of just getting down in your guts. As highly regarded as he is, he's still probably under rated.

On an Island is worth a listen if you haven't already. Here's a cool documentary clip with some great playing and some behind the scenes on that album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whUOQGlkLbY . The "black strat" makes an appearance.
