As a musician and a person, my tastes have changed over the years (thankfully - I mean, I actually bought Slaughter's debut album). That means I listen to different things and I play different things. That also means that every musician out there has the same ability to grow.
Now, growth doesn't mean "no longer liking/playing metal." Shitty music is shitty music - if you change your sound and play shit, I'll call it shit - for example, in my opinion, Megadeth after Rust in Peace (do I hear a lynch mob forming?).
Take for example this example of change:
Black Sabbath --> Judas Priest --> Motorhead --> Iron Maiden --> Metallica
That's Metal growing and changing from 1969 to 1983. There's no reason for us to still live in 1983.
