That's ok, Venom is fine too..but I just feel the need to bring that up whenever Venom is mentioned.

Although I've always wondered how some people don't like Reign in Blood but like other Slayer albums...that's the best Slayer album, yes Raining Blood is a bit too popular because of Guitar Hero, but Angel of Death is just awesome.

        Slayer. Video game. Too popular.

        That's not metal!

And yes - Reign in Blood is the finest 28 minutes of thrash on the planet. Bar none. Who doesn't like it? I want names!

Bah, fuck you all. Slayer are good at what they do. I'm sure their wallets aren't hurting because a few whiners waste their time slagging them at every opportunity. Yeah, they haven't changed much over the years. Who gives a shit?

Metallica died with Cliff Burton. Every song of their's that I love had his stamp on it. He really was the source of all their interesting melodies. Newstead called him the Jimi Hendrix of bass and I tend to agree.
This is something I've been saying since And Justice For All, and something that pretty much EVERYONE I've ever said it to disagreed, saying that And Justice For All was great.

It wasn't awful, and while it may be true (as I read) that Hetfield and Ulrich do a lot of the writing by coming up with lots of "riffs" by jamming together, I would have to guess from the outcome of AJFA that Burton provided a lot of help with arrangement.

I mean, for example, "Shortest Straw" has some great riffs... But they're not so good that I want to hear them 16 times in a row before sliding it up 3 frets and repeating it 16 more times.

Anyway, semi-on-topic, I disagree that being "Metal" means not changing. Metal itself changes over the years as has been pointed out. And individual bands change, sometimes for the better.

To me, there is nothing wrong with progress. Evolving from "Metal" to "different Metal" is not un-metal. Evolving from "Metal" to "pop with a Metal edge" is pretty lame, which is what you mostly hear bands that "sell out" doing.

Then again, I don't believe that you HAVE to change, either. Slayer has been Slayer for a long time, and they're still at it, and they still put on a great show, doing the same old thing they've been doing for years, and that's cool with me.

              Taken from Blabbermouth.net

Hetfield spoke frankly in a recent interview with Classic Rock magazine about the band's so-called "wilderness" years, in the mid-to-latter 90s, during which drug use and disagreements over the group's image and sound nearly drove them apart. Hetfield said he was particularly uncomfortable with the change in the group's image around the release of its 1996 album "Load". Hetfield explained, "The whole 'We need to reinvent ourselves' topic was up. Image isn't an evil thing to me, but if the image isn't you, it doesn't make much sense."

Hetfield said that he thought Ulrich and Hammett were "after a U2 kind of vibe, Bono doing his alter-ego. I couldn't get into it. I would say at least half the pictures that were to be in the booklet, I yanked out. The cover went against what I was feeling. Lars and Kirk were very into abstract art, pretending they were gay. I think they knew it bugged me. I think the cover of 'Load' was just a piss-take around all that. I just went along with all this crazy stupid shit."

Hetfield claimed that Ulrich and Hammett bonded over their drug use during that time and that the band's music suffered too, saying, "A lot of fans got turned off quite a bit by the music — but mostly, I think, by the image."

So...James is now admitting what us "Old" fans have been saying all along...(especially in the last line) They sold out...

Must make those who have been defending them a little uncomfortable...

I only like their first two albums for some reason I just cant get into reign in blood and its not because of its popularity. I will agree that angel of death is a cool song though I love the bass drums in it.

I remember reading in an interview that Kirk was doing a lot of coke around the time of AJFA

Listen to "Lonesome Crow" and "Rocka Rolla" and tell me that sometimes bands don't change and grow for the better

You did not just insult Rocka Rolla, did you? That's way up there in my charts. Love it. But you're right - it does not sound like what we would think of as the "classic Judas Priest" sound which you started to get on Stained Class - IMO. I still like the loose, blues based early metal sound on Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings of Destiny. Proto-metal, if you will.

He may not have insulted Rocka Rolla, but I will. Priest are in my top five bands of all time and I think RR stinks. Sad Wings, on the other hand, is a masterpiece.

You wound me. One for the Road, Rocka Rolla, Cheater and Dying to Meet You are great tunes.

                              Hey - its all good.

The only that never changed in Metallica: Lars' and Kirk's gayness

It all makes sense now, Lars kicked Dave out so he could keep his lover Kirk next to him at all times...and Kirk's first wife didn't divorce him because of the Black Album tour, she really caught him and Lars doing some naughty things in their bed :ROTF: But where does James fit into all of this? He was probably too drunk to care, and then Cliff was too busy actually writing music to notice...and the Metallica mystery is solved.

toxikdeth, I like the first two albums too...they just feel more like Slayer hadn't fully realized their voice yet with those two albums, but by Reign in Blood to me they had matured their music and style to a tee.

Grandturk, it's only Raining Blood and War Ensemble the GH kids know...they would never come to a Slayer concert though, their mommies wouldn't let them, and if they do end up hardcore Slayer fans...well then good.
