  • Guthrie Govan Clinic, Berklee 7/25

My store sponsored a clinic at Berklee College of Music in Boston last weekend with Guthrie Govan and Suhr Guitars. Guthrie jammed on stage for about an hour with Ibanez endorser and Berklee professor Jon Finn. The coolest thing about these jams is the band and Guthrie never rehearsed and had never played together before. Plans for several hours of rehearsals got canned when Guthrie got stuck in traffic coming in from NYC and arrived at the venue 15 minutes before the clinic started. This was all done with some charts and some extremely good sight reading! I just uploaded 5 videos to our youtube channel, check them out!

    Awesome video's. Watched em' all.

Was there a Q & A with Guthrie or was it just a giant jam?

Matt did you challenge him to a "Cuttin Heads" contest? You could!

I thought it was Nili Brosch, but that is a total guess. Girl who covered Govan's "Carlton" solo.

I used to take private lessons from Jon Finn when I was at Berklee (back in the 80's)...

He used to play Kramers back then.

As a "Shredder's" POV, I'd think I'd tear him a new one in that regaurd, or hold my own. Overall, he's a truly amazing, player, ..he's fluid, articulate, with a great feel and tone (for what he does) but everything he plays sounds like I'm watching The Weather Channel. He's gifted, but it does NOT connect with me whatsover. ..There's just no "fire', creativity, and originality. Evewn more so than I feel with players like Rusty Cooley, and John Petrucci. So much talent in a mundane format that leaves me absolutely bored. To me, an amazing musician is the total package..innovation, fire, creativity, inspiring, originality and MOST important songcraft in a context that actually says something and stays with you. From Jimi, Page, Beck, Eddie, Randy, Al Dimeloa, Eric Johnson, SRV, Uli Roth, Criss Oliva,..well, you get the idea. I compiled a list of about 200 greatest players of all time, and he'll NEVER make the cut IMO!.

This is not because I'm retarded metalhead. Even tho that is the case ..I appreciate any player that commands ANY style that captivates you and makes you want more...be it blues, fusion, classical, progressive, rock, metal and ect.

He does convey his lessons extremely well, and I actually copped a few licks from him myself..he's a fuggin' GREAT teacher ! But his style is much TOO generic for me. ..The Weather Channel..the soundtrack to "your local on the 8s"..

OK, I judged him only on what I've seen on youtube vids. I could be missing something. Maybe someone can give me an example of some of his best work. (That don't sound like The Weather Channel)
YES, the dude can seriously play..no doubt. But show me anthything that gives his skills justice. Like I said ..maybe I'm missing something.

It's really hard to do him justice. The scariest thing about him is that he is virtually amazing at EVERY style. It's sort of scary.

I happen to agree. Sure his is technically a monster and can play anything by anyone. But his "Cakes" album was a bit "meh" for me. I played it once and that was that. I am pretty sure he decided not to do another anyway.

To me he sounds like what he is: a monsterously gifted session dude and not an "artist".

guy can play anything. would love to hear him thru a metal set up . I wish i was as good as him technically. theres just somrthin about self taught vs. trained I dont know but the trained guys dont seem to grab me as much even though they are brilliant players.

Man, i would rather have the skills of Guthrie, than Chris Oliva! He can do
one thing great..(Chris) But Guthrie can play a dozen styles perfectly.
This alone makes him interesting... funny how we all differ on what we
think is amazing? I see your point a bit Bill... Who has more Phrasing,
and mojo, David Gilmour? Or Guthrie? Yep..its the old dude.

Well Bobby, when Guthrie can write something good as Hall of the mountain king, gutter ballet, streets, and edge of thorns..I'll concure. But that's NEVER gonna happen is it?

Great at all styles and master of none...which includes having something called an "identity".

I don't know man, maybe it's because I'm a fan boy but I definitely think Guthrie has a style of his own. Clearly molded after Shawn Lane. I'm a secret jazz/fusion guy at heart though.
