When you are "forced" to play an instrument you love... it's not too bad.

When you are "forced" to play an instrument you have no interest in, it's just hell.

I was forced to learn piano + violin + clarinet, because my mom is a piano teacher and a classically trained singer. Therefore her children MUST learn classical instruments.

Thing is, I was never exposed to piano or violin music that could inspire me... was merely told to practice this scale, learn this song... blah blah, so it had no meaning for me. I had no incentive at all to actually learn piano or violin, so I pretended to read formal music notation, but I was simply memorizing the finger positions.

Still had to develop the physical playing techniques, because sometimes I would not get dinner unless I had learned a certain passage. For a little kid, that's just brutal. Unfortunately, this style of "teaching" is way too common in Asia.

I still have absolutely no interest in the clarinet... but after I started to download MP3s in high school, I discovered a lot of piano and violin music that I DO like. If I were simply exposed to inspiring music like that, my mom would have had trouble getting me to stop practicing. No need to force.

Would like to get back to piano and violin eventually, but focusing on the guitar for now...

Getting back to topic: The kid is definitely very good... I don't think he is being forced to play... just my feeling

You're not alone on that. I'm sorry, but when a kid is that young and that good, I HIGHLY doubt that a child has a attention span and drive to be that good at that age. But hell, I wish my parents would have made me play a instrument and locked me in a cellar and told me to play for X amount of hours or I don't eat!

Does Sungha's parents ever force Sungha to play guitar? Never! It has always been Sungha's wish to play guitar even when he was very young.
Because playing guitar gives him so much joy, Sungha does not need anybody's forcing. Sungha's father only aids Sungha to record and film his playing.

Believe me, yes. I'm jealous, I wish I could play that well.
