Yep, the best metal band/guitarist on the planet IMO!!!

Nevermore arrived at the time we thought the boundries of metal and shred reached a plateau. When most heavy hitters jumped ship, and took their fans with them. A time one finger wonders such as Borland, Morello, Head, Munky took all the glory, and George formed Lynch Bizkit.

As Van Halen emerged from the era of Disco..Nevermore emerged from grunge. Yet surpisingly, on guitar forums "fans" of shred rather worship pathetic, washed up has-beens ..while players like Jeff Loomis are still unbeknownst!

This can only mean. Sheople happily graze on whatever they're fed. Or they're still can't figure out the tapping part of Eruption. Therefore Nevermore is so far beyond all comprehension..it may take another decade to grasp a clue of what many already know. Cool, because I'd rather be inspired by the best instead of wondering what Jake E Lee and Vinnie Vincent is doing..

EX: this solo was written in late 1977 by Uli Jon Roth. This kid seems to be much more concerned with his playing abilities instead of doing what's popular..and it shows. This would be a great challenge for Nick (Jacksons Shred) to try next. It's from Uli's first 1978 solo release "Earthquake".. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osJj2...eature=related

This is me when I opened the video. --->

Nevermore isn't 100% gold for me. But they have a high hit/miss ratio. And they are pretty prolific writers. You just need to look at the fact that they had 2 solo albums come out in the last year and are already working on their next studio release.

No matter what though, Loomis is a beast. That guy can hang with anyone in a head cutting contest. I picked up his guitar world instructional DVD and it's funny watching him play stuff slowed down. It's like his mind can't process playing at a slowed down speed and it sounds all clumsy hehe.

I love how Jeff loomis isnt like most shredders these days in the sense that he doesnt just play fast he has some feeling. I always think of him as a modern day becker, I hear alot of becker influence in some of loomis's licks.

For me ..it's weird. A freind of mine introduced me to Jeff about 12 years ago. Jeff put us on the guest list at some tiny club in Columbus Oh. I just picked up their second cd "Politics of Ecstasy" and their debut just prior and it really had an impact..actually more musically than actual shredding. Prolly because I've always stayed up on all the Varney/Shrapnel guys as they came out ect, and here it was well over a decade later since I heard anything that OTT "different", or original since I had to pull over to the side of the road the first time our local metal DJ played Steeler with Yngwie on the college station. It was the biggest WTF moments I had since I heard VH in '78. Besides Uli, Greg Howe, Vinnie Moore, Tony Mac, Becker, Freidman, Gilbert, and ect. Nvermore was much more chaotic, heavier, busier than the 80's stuff I was used to..so I didn't fully absorb it immediately. But I knew he was really good, but I didn't know how good.

There was nobody at this club to see them. There was NO metal scene at the time..around early '97. The place was near empty. So I met with Jeff and the rest of the guys and just started bullshittin' about our favorite metal bands and players. He really didn't know about many of the players/bands I liked but told me he loved VH, Randy, Becker, Freidman, Uli and especially Yngwie. His favorite metal album was "ride the lightning". But his favorite band for his direction of writing style was early Meshuggah. Warrel was huge into Queensryche. So that all made sense. Jeff took neo-classical shred and married that with thrash with weird complex timing of Mesuggah. I just remeber him being this really laid back, humble, quiet, bored, and kinda bummed the place was empty. Then he said "Well, it's time to play"..he went up their and just kicked my fuggin' ass ..the whole band did. But I never seen a metal guitarist that firey and focused in my life. He was possessed, and he played like there was 10,000 people there. It was complete shock and awe for me..and I seen everyone live by this time. I told him he was just as good as anyone I ever saw..and he actually blushed because I was that overwhlemed and impressed. At this time my VH tribute just split up and I was sick to death of ALL the 80's players and my writing style that sounded like VH 80's shred soup like everyone else did to death and gave up on. I couldn't play like Yngwie very well, but for some reason I easilly connected with Jeff's style, and vibe. It was exactly what I needed at a time there was absolutely nothing fresh or new in the metal/shred world going on. He just played his Black RR at the time and a Triaxis and Mesa poweramp. It wasn't till a few years later he became dedicated to playing a 7 string full time..and had the heaviest, complex 7 string riffs I ever heard before. Chris Broderick just followed his lead (pun)..as well as Tim Calvert..Curran Murphy..Pat O' Brien..Steve Smyth..and the friend that introduced me to him.

It was funny when I went to see Uli and waering my Nvermore shirt. He was very excited about it and said "I know that guitar player".."Wha..you know about Jeff Loomis??" He said that "Jeff was an amazing young man, what a incredible talent", and that Jeff gave him one of his sig models. Uli made a point to vist Jeff in Germany at a hotel Frankfurt. Jeff stated that Uli gave him some private lessons that night. How much confirmation is there when after that? Uli>Yngwie>Marty>Jason>Jeff..all good friends bonded by enthusiasm of their craft. Jeff said I was "crazy"..no, I wasn't..I was absolutely right. He's in good company! He said he liked my demo, and there is a riff that must have stuck in his noggin. That is equally to King Edward himself truly diggin' you wrote Shawn. Yeah, I'm produ to say I'm one of Jeff's and NM's biggest fanboys, and I was there at every show watching their progress. I'm waiting for their new release early next year like it was 1980 all over again..waiting for Women and Children First.

I'll post some of my fave Jeff/NM moments and interviews.

                Jeff tearing it up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvfg0iLnzsw

It started with VH and Yngwie..of course..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yyCp...eature=related

Ripping off Jason Becker and meeting Uli..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkZXW-DS9XA

This kinda stuff he does just kicks me in the dick..I love it!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpIRA...eature=related

One of my favorite JL solos..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfJ3_...eature=related

Well I could do this forever..what I dig most about Jeff is what I dig about all my faves..just like Ed..many people overlook his groove, timing, rythm, feel and tone is..also starting out as a drummer. Prolly why my kid can kick my ass rhymically in some ways. Also all the guitarist I love seems to attack the strings VERY hard. Yngwie may have a lighter touch in studio but he does play pretty aggressive live and I like that better. Aggressive players Frank Marino, Gary Moore, John Sykes, Eddie, Dime, Steve Stevens, and Zakk too. Uli mixes it up the most..he's the most dynamic player on this planet or any other.

wait.. I gotta find that Uli master class video..all about his picking dynmaics..it's awesome..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlvCTXXZn20

                Gilbert..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqWTz...eature=related

They ALL have a defined connection..Jeff just amps the fuck out of it!!

It NOT just fast articulate noodling like

                Buckethead..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czpwrg8zNls

                Petrucci..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wuai...eature=related

Or the lack of rythm or feel of these fuggin' meth head asshats..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKsGp...eature=related

Shawn as far as Warrel Dane..dude strat with his solo record "Praises to the war machine"..he's such an incredible writer and singer. If I were to hand pick any singer in the world for one single song..it would be Warrel Dane.. It's actually one of my wife and son's favorite albums. She didn't "get" Warrel at first with Nevermore. Now she absolutely does, and loves him. She loves Sanctuary like Tox does..Besisdes Seattle Warrel brought more of a Geoffe Tate/Halford thing to Nevermore..not really Queensryche but he's definitely a trained four octave operea singer and chef that owns his own resturant..I wonder if he and Jim (Bas) still does.

"Hail Yesterday"..you'll see Gary (his sig) , Bibz and I say that alot..it's from this..it really sticks in the noggin'.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvYm0kGjrFU

You guys should go buy The Voyager DVD..Best Buy prolly has it. That's a GREAT introduction to Nevermore, and it covers songs from the first record like Steve posted in this thread..

Watch that a couple times and they'll be your new favorite band..I promise.

+1 the DVD is great! I'm a noob as far as Nevermore is concerned, but I really dig Loomis. Here's another cool song (the Voyager version is on youtube too)... Great catchy chorus!

Yep, they're from Seattle and Warrel is defintely from the Tate/Halford school. He used to sing really high..prolly the highest singer ever (literally) on the first 1988 Sanctuary (QR song title) that Dave Mustaine produced.

There's another band called Lethal with Pat O' Brian (nevermore, Cannibal Corpse) that sound MUCH more like queenryche before they changed later on...but so did Queenryche.

Steve did you hear the remakes of "Believe in Nothing"..That was their "Radio" song back in 2000 and All That remains and Firewind covered it..Firewind doing them much more justice and ATR really fags it up!!!

Firewind..well Gus G is a good player, and cool band..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImM4nBdgqoc

Comparing them really makes you appreciate Warrel!!..Well, he wrote it...duh.

Nevermore's unedited version..without the chopped guitar intro.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VukQnMnRjM

That song and "the Heart collector" could be HUGE radio hits given that chance. But I don't want nevermore to be RADIO popular. Bands like NM don't need the mainstream to survive. Metal fans are much more loyal dickholes like me..

Jeff loomis continues to impress me they say Becker took yngwie style up a level and I'm feeling that loomis took it up another .
