  • Def Leppard Poison Review from NC

There was a thread on this some time ago but I couldn't find it so.... I saw Def Leppard and Poison last night in Raleigh NC.. Here are my thoughts.

First off, Cheap Trick was on the bill as well, but I spend the whole time they were on stage standing in line waiting to get in. I've seen them a couple of times before and in my opinion, I don't think I missed a whole lot there.

Poison - Poison put on a great show, but there were two things I was dissapointed about. First was the cameras stayed zoomed out and never moved and I was far enough back that I wasn't able to see a whole lot. I guess only the headliners get camera action these days.. as far as thier performance, it was flawless except for one thing. I guess C.C. has some kind of point to prove as far as his abilities because he successfully butchered every lead by turning the most simple tasteful recorded part into a shred session. Even the opening lead for Something to believe in, which, on record is a very tasteful part, was a full shred "look what I can do" exersize.

Def Leppard - DAMN!!!! I mean really!! DAMN!!! I'm not a huge Def Leppard fan. Not since Hysteria have I been a huge fan of their music. And I've seen them a couple of times before, and they were always good, but they were completely on their game musically last night. Joe Elliott's vocals were troublesome and due to that, alot of the high harmonies just weren't there, but musically, just DAMN!!! From the first riff Phil and Viv proved why they are a guitar duo to be reckoned with, and the rythym section was as tight as I have ever heard. Phil started off with his new Jackson (which I found out last night glows in the dark added a higher cool factor to and already hot axe. ) and switched out between three other PC1's throughout the show.

I wasn't going to go to this show, but my wife wanted to see Poison (or Brett Michaels actually) and I had never seen them live anyway so we went to see them. Considering the dissapointment between CC's shredding and not being able to see because of the lack of cameras. I'm really glad Def Lep "brought it" the way they did because it turned an otherwise dissapointing show into an impressive performance even with Joes voice going south.

I got the same impression every time I see ome of thier live stuff on VH1 or MTV. It sounds way out of place with thier "music"

Yeah. I'm ok with taking certain liberties with leads in a live setting, but he was just WAAAAY over the top.

Good review, glad to hear Leppard are still kicking ass. Hope they don't take too long to get another album done.

It would be one thing if C.C. was a good guitar player with good technique, but he isn't. He ends up sounding like a bad Vinnie Vincent copy... terrible. He's unlistenable live.

Y'know? I would not have agreed with you before seeing this show. I've always thought his recorded leads were good. Nothing technical or complicated, and certainly not shred, but tasteful. He was never somebody I considered a guitar god or anything like that, but certainly capable of doing justice to the type of music that Poison is known for, which is simple good time party music.. But now, I'm pretty dissapointed.

Well yeah, his recorded solos are one thing, but live he's total crap.

CC is downright annoying live. I think a little more of him as a guitar player in that he *can* tear it up, but he did really distract from the songs by putting on a clinic in speed, alternate picking, and whammy abuse about 2/3 of the way through each song.

Last time I saw Lep, it was outdoors, and Bryan Adams opened. They were GREAT. Joe's voice is failing on him a bit, but he's in his 50's I imagine, and his stuff was always pretty high. He's put out a lot of years of abuse on those ol' chords.
