I don't know this for a fact but I would guess he never went solo because he just isn't that strong of a song writer anymore. To my ears.. the early VH was a colaboration between Ed and Alex. The later was a colaboration between Sammy and Ed. Ed also knows that for many years.. the signature VH sound had alot to do with Mike's backup vocals. I really don't think Ed would be a strong song writer on his own. Thats why I don't think he ever went solo. There are a ton of monster famous players like Ed who never did anything solo.

I saw VH back in 07' and the wolf could hold his own, but he had no mojo and seemed to be the odd man out. His musical tastes lean towards teen pop and I can't exactly imagine how he'll be as a songwriter.
Its just kind of odd to me that as famous as ed was, he never made a solo record or a catchy radio instrumental tune. He had so much time off after VHIII, Its a shame he just drank and got baked instead of using his talents.Last edited by The Rossness; 08-14-2009, 09:37 PM.

The difference between Van Halen and Van Hagar was that Ed could throw out every lick, riff or whatever to Dave and Dave would automatically sing over it. Ed said that Dave was the only person he knew who could do that over any of his crazy shit and Dave really enjoyed doing it.
Sammy wasn't like that so Ed started to write more structured songs. Dave didn't need structure to sing over, Sammy did."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Writing riffs is not writing songs, it's writing riffs. Van Halen was a band in the truest sense of the word in that they all worked together equally to make the whole thing. Ed did the guitars, Mike did the bass, Alex did the drums, and Dave did the words. Together they made great songs. Ed alone is just another wanker. Granted he's a more famous wanker than any other, but that doesn't change the fact that he requires a band format to do the things he's famous for.
Now, maybe if he wanted to do a collection of piano bar favorites, or maybe something that isn't in the same vein as VH....I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
